I am still using Video Studio 6 and Video Studio 7 versions.
I have a couple of home movie (analog tape to dvd) volumes which I have lost the original tape and files for and I badly need to transcode the dvd formated (video_ts) chapters back to a true MPEG2 format so I can both re-edit and re-arrange (add or delete) chapters for new Volume burn.
I have tried several programs that promise to do this (most recent is Magic DVD Ripper) but the transcoded MPEG2 files don't seem to be recognized as true MPEG2 by Video Studio.
I can open them in the user interface and drop them into the video timeline but audio will not play.
VS seems to allow me to trim/create edit points (very slow and sluggish) but when I try to render out as mpeg2 it processes at a rate that will take about 40 hours for approx. 3Gig of content.
I rendered a much smaller clip (still took hours and hours) and then opened it for dvd creation but received nothing but error messages.
IS there a dvd back to mpeg2 transcode utility available that will allow me to be successful or is there a newer version of VS I need that will work with such transcoded files?
Thanks - I have edited and rendered a zillion hours of video with VS and love it.

Without buying something - please original question
Hi
First to John - thank you for the thoughtful response and I have scanned the "how to" and have also considered upgrading to Version 10 but can I please get help with the applications and capabilities I currently have which is a P4 2.3Gig chip supported by 2gig or ram running both Win2000 and WinXP and loving and trying to continue to work with Video Studio versions 6 and 7?
Does someone know of an existing transcoder (some like to call them rippers) that will do a credible job of transcoding dvd files back to or into true (may I call it "raw") mpeg2 so that I can open them, edit them and then re-render for dvd creation?
Thanks in advance for all help and shared experience.
