Newbie - and first disc created after attempt no.12!!!

Post by loveclose »

Hi everyone - loveclose calling. :D

Owned VideoStudio 10 Plus for all of three days......

I very quickly edited Xmas and New Year material but as you can probably imagine have had no end of issues burning it all to DVD. Having found this forum pretty quickly, I was able to read a lot of info and of course found that I was doing all the things I wasn't supposed to....

Anyway, I reckon I've cracked it (shouldn't have said that.....), but would appreciate anyone following my ramblings and seeing if there's anything i've missed or whether there is still anything I'm doing drastically wrong.

1) Camera I'm using is a new Sony Hard Disc camera. I download the movie files direct to my PC hard drive, so the need for direct video capture in Video Studio is not required.

2) I'm using a PAL template, 25fps and my project properties are set to this

3) I render each movie into an MPEG-2 file again using the Pal DVD template at 25fps

4) I then clear the project from the main menu - ie, nothing in timeline

5) Open create disc, and import the Mpeg-2 files I've rendered and create the DVD menus.

6) Burn to DVD

My previous 11 attempts had the following main 2 problems:

1) Disc burn failure (can't remember error message)

2) Choppy video playback on DVD player using DVD just burned. Zoom in's were ok, but panning left and right was choppy - unwatchable.

The daft thing is - on the 12th attempt, which yielded my first perfect disc, I had an error message saying that the DVD burn had failed. Well, I checked the disc and it had something burnt on it - a perfect copy with no jerky panning.

Have I cracked it??

One final question - all the titles and menus I find in the library are 29fps with a Microsoft AVI template - ok to mix these with my movie files which are MPEG-2 25fps jobbies? Or do I have to somehow convert the other Ulead library content first?

Wow - gone on a bit.....Sorry!!!

Hi,

The jerky panning you describe is most probably a field order issue. For the end burn to be a good one in any version of Video Studio, your properties must be identical throughout the project.

If you were to capture using Lower Field First and then at some point during the render or burn process change to upper Field First, then you would encounter jerky pans and zooms.

Make sure that you set your capture properties correctly, which usually means LFF for DV video and UFF for analogue video, and then keep all your properties the same by using the 'same as project properties' setting during rendering. At the burn stage, also make sure that the properties are identical to your completed video file.

Hi loveclose

The movie files saved to your hard drive have video properties.
These settings should be used for your video studio project properties.

When you Share-Create Video File¡Xselect same as first clip or project properties. This will render the new file using your original properties.
-----------------------------------------------------
To check your video file properties, right click the thumbnail in the library or timeline and select properties.
Or
Tick ¡VShow messages¡K¡K.. from File Preferences.
Start a new project and insert your video. From the pop-up window select details

What are they?

As Terry said---For the end burn to be a good one in any version of Video Studio, your properties must be identical throughout the project.

Hope this Helps

Hi Trevor, thanks for your reply.:)

These are my video properties:

File Format: Pal DVD
Mpeg2-Video Upper Field First
24bits, 720x576 4:3
25.000 fps
Variable bit rate
Dolby Digital Audio
48000Hz
No Layer
256kps

My Project Properties appear to be identical

However, (and this is the querey), the properties of one of Uleads library files which I use - V02 - has different properites:

Microsoft AVI Files - Open DML
29.970 fps
815.05 kps
24bit - 720x480

If I insert this clip into the timeline with the 'show message' box ticked, no message appears. The message only happens when I put my first camcorder file into the timeline.

The major difference between my video files and the default project files appears to be 'upper field first' - the project properties defaults to 'lower field first'. My message informs me of this and suggest the change if I have the option to show messages ticked. If I don't have the box to show messages checked, the project properties appear to change automatically.

It's really the difference between files like VO2 and my camcorder's files that concerned me. Can I not use the VO files as a result? Frames per second are different for a start....

Hope this is what you were asking......!!

No -- keep 'Show message' checked. Insert your imported video file from the camera (NOT one of the stock files), and when the message appears asking if the project settings should match those of the video, accept this. That will ensure that your project uses the same Upper Field First settings of your imported video. THAT is the important factor. If it reverts to Lower Field First and the great bulk of your video is in fact Upper Field First, you will inevitably get the sort of effect you can see in your final product -- possibly jerky video and definite jagged lines which appear especially during fast moving or panning shots.

Don't worry about the stock videos like the V02 you mention. Yes, they have been prepared using NTSC speed, rather than PAL, but they were prepared using a completely different codec (Indeo). And believe me, I come from a PAL country, and I used to use a number of these stock videos in my own productions. And they all convert quite nicely when inserted in my PAL projects and work perfectly.

But just bear in mind, it is your own video which you have to get right -- and it is your video's properties which govern the whole project, not the incidental bits and pieces you might want to add. And the basic rule is keep the Field Order for your own video the same throughout the project and the burn.

Appreciate the help folks - thanks a lot.

I've got to shoot some fresh video now before I get back into burning dvd's, but it looks like I've got some more reading to to.....!!

Thanks for the reassurance over the stock videos, Ken. It's nice to know I can still use them without coming to too much harm!

Other than the dvd burn, I found the editing process very straightforward and I was relieved to see that ALL the fades, wipes, effects and so on are available without being greyed out pending further cost.

Looking forward to seeing more of the forum...
