I have been asked by a friend of mine to make him a cover for his book that is going to press in like a week, I have made the cover and the back and even the side of the book using PhotoImpact. When I send the files to the publisher they keep saying that when they make the file the size of the book, that there is only 72 DPI and I need like a minimum of 300 dpi. I see where I can go and change the resolution manually and I have done that even as high as 800 dpi I have set it at , but the files are not changing. Oh please someone help me to take the files I have and guide me to how to be able o make these files for the printer come in at 300 DPI or greater.
God Bless you,
Mike Flipp
Need help with DPI for publishing a book cover, help!
The printer is essentially demanding that you do the work for him
I have made several book covers for books authoured by a teacher friend and have never submitted anything greater than 72 dpi and everything has worked quite well.
I don't know what the size (in pixels) of your starting image is but let's assume that it's 800 px high by 600 px wide. The resolution (from your screen) is 72dpi.
To make the resolution 300dpi, you must resize it. In PI 10, go to the Adjust drop down, select Adjust Size. Your new size is 300/72=4x larger or 400%. Change 100% to 400% in the Used Defined box. Change the resolution to "User defined" at 300 dpi.
This is what the Adjust size box should look like.

Note that your image size has increased from 800x600 to 3200x2400. You're going to have to burn the resized image to a CD to get it to the printer; it's now a rather large 22.5MB file.
