I have an EasyShare P880, and have played around with the video aspect. Recently, to get some clips to play with in VS10+, I recorded myself shoveling out the driveway. I was able to insert these MOV files, which uses the MJPEG codec, and create MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos.
Here are the properties of both a MOV file that was inserted and an MPEG file created. The MPEGs play perfectly...

Don't know if this helps or not, but I had the exact same identical problem when I started (all of three days ago....)
Clip sound great
Project sound awful (crackling)
but rendered sound ok
I did two things straight away and one of them cured the problem - don't know which...
I updated my old soundcards driver (which my previous movie editor hated, which is why it wasn't installed)
I installed the SP1 (I think) from the Ulead download section.
Next time I played the project clip, the sound was as it should be - identical to the clip.
Don't know if this is at all helpful - particularly as I am new to this software. Hope it gets sorted for you.

Here's an example I done in the time it took from my previous post until now. This includes uploading, and testing the link..
I took one of my MOV files inserted it into VS10+. Set my Project Properties to match that of the video clip. Important: Use the same codec ie; MJPEG, frame rate, etc.. I also added titles, a flashback transition along with the fades. I cut the clip, this is where the flashback transition is placed. I also added a Smartsound music clip. Then Created a WMV file using one of the templates (320 x 240). The MOV file was 620 x 480..
Note about the MOV files with Kodak, they should be using the MJPEG codec. What works for me, is that I installed part of the lousy Kodak Software. The part that allows transferring from the camera to the PC. This should install the MJPEG codec onto your system, that Kodak uses. After that VS, MSP etc, is able to use it, without problems..
Here's the short clip, it is 30 secs and about 1.9 meg. The original MOV file is 150 megs. I used only 30 secs of the original. On the Filewind page click on the words Download the File.

Hi dannysaysnootrevor andrew wrote:Ok update
I do not use Mov files, but found two clips on my pc.
Inserted these into Video Studio 10+
Playback in project mode is very very bad.
Playback as a clip appears ok.
Audio 22.050Khz 16 bit mono
Audio 16.000Khz 16bit mono
If I manage to get the clips playing I will post back.
Trevor
I have uninstalled QT 7 and re-installed QT 6
I used QT 6 from the VS version 9
My Mov files appear to be playing ok in project mode

Hi Trevor,
Yes the original MOV files play without problems in the timeline. I think your correct that the version of Quicktime player has something to do with it. However I'm using the latest QT Player, 7.0
Like I stated earlier that the original MOV file is over 150 megs, so couldn't really upload that one. I figured WMV was the best for and example as most everyone has that, and it is one of the codecs that VS10 has a template. I done a 2-fold test, 1) to test the MOV file being edited and converted, 2) how well VS10+ done converting MOV (MPJEG) to WMV.. Guess they both worked ok. I done all this while everything including the internet was running on my PC, not from my editing profile, nothing crashed froze, or hung. The Share>Create Video File only took about 30 secs..
Regards..

I think maybe you can file a report via the Tech Support Form to Ulead so they can fix it.
