Newbe help on moving timeline video

Post by railroadguy »

Just started with VideoStudio 10 and so far so good. I have a ton of questions but the more I play with it, the more questions I answer for myself

One thing that I can't seem to do, and it's probably easy, If I have video on the time line started at 00 and then I add more clips and have say 30 minutes of video all edited. Now I come back and want to add a title to the front end, but not over the video. How can I move the video, and sound if any, down the time line say 15 seconds so I can add a title in the beginning?

Same for adding a clip in between two other clips already on the time line. If I click insert the new clip always pops in at the end. Yes, I see that I can then move it where I want it, but thought there might be an easier way.

Hi Railroadguy, welcome to the forums,

(Page 61 of the manual)
Any clips in the main video track will always slide to the left, to fill any empty space. I guess you could say that it aligns left. So in order to place a title at the beginning of your video, you need to use something in that space. Ulead provides color clips. They are found in the Color Library (pull-down menu of Video clips). Just drag a color (which are just color images) to the front of your video. The video clips will move to the right. You can then adjust the duration by entering a value in the Color Tab next to the Attribute Tab. Then add your title in that time area.

You might want to enable Ripple Editing first. That way any clips, titles music etc., in the other tracks stay aligned with the main track. (See Page# 64 of the manual).

Thank you. Yes I printed the manual but kind of skip around reading it.

Now I understand the colors and the fact that I can open up video clips as well as images in the library area and then drag them to where ever I need them.

OK, one last question.... should I see the video frames on the timeline? All I see is the first frame and then a gray area the length of the clip. This appears no matter how close I zoom in. In Multi Trim I see the frames but not in the timeline. I can step frame by frame and see that in the edit window above the timeline.

Now, these are clips converted to AVI from MOV files if that makes any difference. I am still using the trial version, maybe that is the problem?

To see all the frames (which I don't use, it consumes more resources) go to File || Preferences || Clip Display Mode. This is on the General tab. You have 3 options,
  • File Name Only
  • Thumbnail Only
  • Thumbnail and Filename
The second choice is what your after. I use the last one, which shows the first frame. If I need to do a frame-accurate cut, then I will change to thumbnail only.

Were the MOV files created in a digital still camera, camcorder or downloaded from the internet? The reason I ask is, is because converting them to AVI from the compressed format will not yield better quality. In fact you are going to take a hit on the MOV --> AVI conversion, then again if you choose to create a DVD.

The trial version should not be the problem. Since you are working with AVI, (which flavor?) you may not have experienced the audio track problems that have been reported using MOV files. Flavor of AVI you ask? Yes AVI is merely a container, unless you are talking about uncompressed AVI (audio video interleave). AVI can hold, DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4, and other codecs.

Thanks again, both of you. I shall now continue reading the book and to play with this and order the full version after the holiday.

I had a hard time working with MOV files from a video camera. (Slow response etc.) I saw there were patches for the program but thought I would wait till I bought the real software. I did convert the MOV to AVI using Indeo® video 5.10 from another program.

This is all for play as I am ordering some A2D equipment (Canpous ADVC300) so I can begin transferring and editing from many Sony 8mm tapes I have.

The Canopus is an excellent device, if somewhat pricey. But unless your digital video camera has passthrough, if you want to capture in DV format, then you have to choose a device like that or, like me, buy a Sony Digital 8 camera which happily takes analogue 8mm and Hi8 tapes and plays them digitally over Firewire in DV format to your computer. That works a treat too -- though probably costs even more. But at least it gives me a back-up camera!!

My Sony analog camera (V9) bit the dust a few years ago. I plan to use my Sony 8mm deck (EC-S 550) to run into the Canopus. I had thought about a new camera with pass through, however, since I have the deck I thought I wuld spend the time and money working on the some 80 hours of video I now have and hold off on a new camera. Plus I have some old VHS stuff from friends and you know how that goes
