Maximum Project Size?

Post by awillem »

I just got an HP940i dl dvd recorder and I tried to create a video that was 1.5 hours long using a dual layer disk. I received a message that 'This project exceeds maximum project size. Do you want to reduce the project size? Click Yes to fit, No to continue or cancel to abort.'

Can someone advise me on how to proceed with this?

Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to burn a .avi file direct to a DVD ? - then it will not fit, 1.5 hours of .avi will give a file size of around 21Gb - you will not get that on any DVD - you need to convert the video to mpeg first in which case you should easily get 1.5 hours on a single layer DVD let alons a dual layer.

On the assumption that you did create an mpeg file first did you actually have the dual layer blank DVD in the tray at the time - had your copy of VideoStudio recognised it as being present - what were the 'Required' and 'Available' figures showing at the bottom of the final burn screen before you clicked on 'Burn'.

Thank you for the reply.

I apologize for leaving out some details.

I am converting an .avi file to mpeg. It definitely recognized that there was a dual layer dvd in the drive as I can see the 'amount of disk space required' and 'the amount of disk space available'. It definitely showed here that the dual layer disk was present. My actual video is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

I went ahead and asked it to make the DVD anyway by answering a couple of questions. It is in the process rendering/converting now.

It is interesting that there is a colored bar at the bottom of the screen. It has a green part, a yellow part and a red part. The green part has the following text '5.84 (6.27) GB/1 Hour 40 Min 27 sec' the yellow part is blank and the red part has 4.38 (4.70) GB'. Any thoughts on what this means?

I checked my .pdf version of the Video studio 10 plus manual and on page 126 it indicated that to reduce the project size you can do the following:

Notes:
• Make sure your project does not exceed 4.37 gigabytes when burning onto a 4.7-
Gigabyte DVD disc.
• If you will burn a DVD with nearly 2 hours of video, consider these options to
optimize the project size: use a video data rate not higher than 4000 kbps, use
MPEG audio, or use still image menus instead of motion menus.

It seems to be referring only to the case where you are using a standard 4.7 gb disk.

Thanks in advance.

the coloured bars indicate the sizes of the burn, the green part is your actual video with it's size and duration - the yellow bar is the maximum recommended size on a DVD and the red bar is the full DVD capacity.

From the figures you quote it sounds as though you have not clicked on the DVD type selection box imeadiately to the left of the green section and chosen the dual layer disc option - ie - does that box to the left of the green bar say "DVD 8.5v G" - if not click on whatever it says (presumably "DVD 4.7G" ) and select the 8.5 option.
