Hi there.
I have recently bought Videostudio 10 and yesterday set about starting to capture some video from my Camcorder (sony DCR TRV 33E Mini DV)
I read the procedures for capturing the best quality on PAL and set it up as it says on the stickie...
However when I went to capture the video a screen came up that said that the capture setting was 640x480 and I wanted PAL 720x576 as stated in the procedures.
I have tried to change the settings to 720x576 but 640x480 is the best I can get...There is no option for 640x480in the DVD PAL list either..
Is there something really obvious that I am missing?
Thanks for any help
Andrew

Since you have a mini DV digital video camera, then you don't use the USB cable that came with the camera: that is normally only for transferring still photos taken by the camera or else low quality streaming video (like a web camera). For high quality transfer, you MUST use Firewire (called i-Link on your camera --c heck your camera's Manual for its location but it will usually be somewhere near the mini USB port.) The problem is that no camera manufacturer of which I am aware includes a Firewire cable with the camera, but they usually include a USB cable. This gives users the wrong impression that they use USB for the connection.
Of course, your computer must have a Firewire connection. But if it doesn't, then Firewire cards are cheap these days, and usually come with a connecting cable as well. With regard to the latter, make sure you get a cable with the right plugs at either end -- normally it is a small 4 pin one at the camera end and a larger 6 pin one at the computer end.
Transferring via firewire is exactly that -- a simple transfer of the video in your camera in exactly the same format. The frame size you got (640 x 480) is not only not the one you are after but is (1) apparently an NTSC size and (2) is not a size which is compatible with burning a DVD later. Firewire should automatically give you the standard PAL 720 x 576.

Hi Andrew
Just to add to the earlier replies.
When capturing via Firewire, the footage is transferred to Video Studio.
No re-coding takes place .
I think this is the best way to capture.
The captured files are Avi at 13 Gb per hour
Video Studio will take control of the camera, allowing you to control the camera from the pc screen.
You have no Capture Properties to select with the exception of the DV-Type.
Choose DV-Type 1 from the Options cogwheel
Good luck
Trevor
