Switching from PSP to PhotoImpact (maybe)

Post by Iria »

I've been using PSP for years, but the recent 11.11 patch installed, without asking, Protexis licensing software. My main problem with this is the "no ask"" part. Earlier versions did not have this installed.

Also, the blasted Protexis stuff does NOT get uninstalled when I uninstall PSP (naturally).

So, if I am to switch to PhotoImpact, I have to ask:

a) Does PhotoImpact 12 require activation (I saw something about 11 requiring it, but 12, not). Even for ESD? (Honestly, I haven't been able to find 12 boxed anywhere) online.

b) How about installing licensing software like Protexis or anything else (I shudder to think of the Turbotax DRM that caused me to switch from that sw to TaxCut).

Any info would be appreciated and might add some $$$ to Ulead's coffers.

Oh, I also saw someone selling PhotoImpact 12 via ESD on eBay. Anyone know if those are legit?

Hi Iria, welcome to the forums,

Protexis licensing is to used to protect against piracy. I done some reading about it. It is not supposed to "phone home", can be used with or without internet connection, etc., You can read more about it HERE.

AFAIK, Ulead does not use Protexis Licensing. When MSP 8 was first released they tried using a required online activation. However numerous users of that software use it on dedicated machines, that do not have internet connection. So they removed the activation. With PI they just use the Serial Number registration.

Now most software nowadays has a Phone Home feature built in, and Ulead's is no exception. The software is capable of checking for updates at specified time periods. This is easily disabled. In PI just go to File || Preferences, and uncheck that option. PI 11 did not use activation either.

You want a full boxed version? Just go Ulead.com. Be advised that Ulead's site is known for being as slow as molasses in winter, at various times.

If you are obtaining legitimate copies, then you should not be overly concerned about the Piracy protection that the manufacturer's include. They have to do something to protect their interests against those that choose to hack the software and distribute it freely. Again Ulead does not use this form.

Now I suppose you are also thinking that you would be escaping Corel. Wrong, Corel just completed the acquisition of Intervideo, which had acquired Ulead about a year ago. Ulead, even though the software is still branded as such is being dissolved into what is now known as Intervideo Digital Tech.

I would not recommend buying any software on Ebay. The risk is too great for the software to be pirated, altered to include viruses, or even what Ulead calls an SE (Simple Edition), which are bundled free with various pieces of hardware. The SE versions are not full versions. Look at my Sig, and you will see that I own several of Ulead's programs, and several versions of them. I have always obtained them straight from Ulead. That way I know that I am getting legitimate software.

My main problem with the PSP install of Protexis is no warning or anything. Give me a warning at least!

I know what these companies say but I don't want to end up with something that won't uninstall (like Protexis).

If it installs something that uninstalls if the software is uninstalled, that's great, but otherwise, no. And Protexis does not get uninstalled when you uninstall PSP.

That's the reason I switched from Turbotax to Taxcut. Macrovision (which I got when I installed a patch to a game) is difficult to remove. Once I read that Turbotax had this, I switched.

So my main issue is NOT paying for software. It's getting licensing SERVICES that run all the time and suck up (admittedly minor PER service) cycles and memory. And in the case of some of this stuff, like ... what's that game copy protection that screws up your system at the same time ... can't recall right now ... basically it installs drivers that in many cases hose your system.

Did you buy PSP from Corel? Did you contact them about Protexis being installed and how to uninstall it? I'm sure Corel Tech support would be willing to assist you with this.

I'm not following you on Macrovision being installed on your system. Macrovision is a copy-protection technology, that is 1) very, very expensive. To obtain a license to use Macrovision it will set you back $30k initial fee, and $15k per year. So I don't believe that anyone is going to "give" that away, or allow it to be installed willy nilly. 2) Is used in DVDs and CDs to keep people from pirating them.

Then as far as an encryption for my tax records, I would welcome that with open arms. Why in the world would you not want vital personal information protected? Do you want hackers, or thieves to be able to get their hands on that information easliy? I sure don't.

Aside from that, like I stated Ulead does not use Protexis, or on-line activation. I've been purchasing Ulead products for several years, and never had anything like that covertly installed. I also have used Corel's products, and Jasc. Again I've never came across any covertly installed programs, or utilities.

Sony got itself into big, big trouble over the installing a "Rootkit" type utility, unknown to the users. This was discovered shortly after they started engaging in that, and was the only company to employ that. Believe me the other giants watched and paid attention.

Macrovision was installed by Turbotax. Actually, the tech used by Macrovision was called C-Dilla.

It was also installed by a game patch I installed for Mechwarrior 4 Black Knight. After doing this it re-labelled my HD and I could not undo the label --- ever.

Here's the link to the story about the big flap over Macrovision and Turbotax.

PI does not install any protection software in your system. It only installs its component utilities like Ulead GIF Animator, Ulead COOL 360 and Ulead PhotoExplorer.

PI is only been protected by using a serial number, if that's what you only cared.

Will PI be packaged with some protection software in the future? Well, actually I do not know, but at least current version is not.

Buying ESD of Ulead products via eBay is not legit, according to the End-User License Agreement I believe.

You can buy a BOX version of PI in http://www.ulead.com/store/pi/runme.htm

Hope this helps.

Thanks. As I said, it's

a) Installing it without telling me
b) leaving the licensing software behind even AFTER I uninstall PSP

That irks me.

I had a feeling it would be left behind, which is why I took the trouble to test it.
