Vista Pack switches off Aero

Post by fredb »

Is it normal that Aero is switched off when running VdeoStudio 10 Plus? Vista flashes the screen and a bubble indicates that "The color scheme has been changed to Vista Basic".

I was under the impression that getting certified for Vista by MS would include compatibility for Aero.

Here's how I proceeded to install VS10+ under Vista (RC2):
- Installed VS10 +
- Installed Extra content
- Installed VS Sp1, at least attempted. I got a message that it may not have installed properly
- Installed Vista 5 in 1 pack.

After this VS reports version 10.0.0110.3 Plus

Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't have Vista and not planning on getting it in the near future.
Perhaps the answer to yur problem lies in the part I have highlighted.

Hi,

I guess it's by design... some of MS's own stuff does the same. If you have MS Digital Image Suite 2006 and apply the Vista patch, it acts the same way.
VS reacts the same for me (of course  ). The only thing I did different was that I didn't try to apply SP1, but instead applied the Vista patch directly on my ESD version of VS.
Anyway, the switching back to the non-aero theme shouldn't prevent you from using VS in any way.

Martin,

Thanks for your useful post, you confirm that this problem is not unique to my machine and is "by design". I suspect VS 11 will have a redesigned UI compatible with Aero.

At least VS 10 is patched to work with Vista now.

Hi,

To turn off Aero UI when VS 10 Vista is running is by design, and it's still Vista compatible and is permitted by Microsoft.

The reason to turn off Aero UI is because in some situation the Aero UI will cause video rendering to be flickering. And that's why you will also see some other video / DVD programs like InterVideo WinDVD 8 to turn Aero UI off when running on Vista.

Hi H.T.

Thanks for your expert answer. So Ulead programmers actually switch off Aero, I thought Vista used the mechanism to run programs in some kind of compatibilty mode. That's fine if it provides stability, I would not want rendering quality to be impacted by the UI. To me transparency, etc... is nice to have, not a must have.
However I read somewhere that turning off Aero has an impact on performance since now the GPU is no longer used to render the UI, and you get worst performance than even in XP where at least some was offloaded to the GPU. Apparently in Vista when Aero gets turned off the UI is enterely handled by the CPU.
So the bottom line here would be that we gain in stability but lose some in performance?

It depends. However, in my side it seems no big performance down compared with XP.
