Next button gray when trying to burn a disc

Post by super_hunter »

After creating several test discs with VisualStudio 10, I did a fair amount of multi-trim editing etc and when I select "Tools -> Create Disc", the screen appears where you select if you want to create menus and use the first clip as the introductory, but this time the "Next" button is grayed out. I have a DVD RW disc in, and on the status at the bottom is shows that my 1hr 15min project will fit on the disc. Any ideas what would make this Next button disabled all the sudden?

Update: I have a project in a timeline that consumes 1 hr and 15 mins. If I uncheck the "Use First Clip as Introductory" checkbox, the Next button becomes available. In general, I have found that managing and creating chapters (and getting chapters to appear on the disc) one of the most unintuitive aspects of the software.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forums,

I tried replicating your problem, however the only way the Next button is grayed out is if the Timeline is empty. What workflow are you using? It would appear that you might be using the Create Movie Wizard. Not many of us use the Wizards, as we like to manually create our own.

When you are selecting Tools>Create Disc, you have a project in the timeline correct? This can be done with VS, however it is not recommended. When skipping the step of Share>Create Video, VS still must Render a DVD compliant MPEG2, but it also has to build the menus, mix the audio/video back together, making sure all your edits, added music, titles, effects are included, and burn the disc. This can task the computer greatly, and possibly fail.

So the recommend way is Capture your video, Edit your video, then Create a Video file from your project (Share>Create Video). Open a new project (which clears the timeline), go directly to the Share step without adding anything to the timeline, select Share>Create Disc, which will open the Burn Module. Then insert the Newly created video file(s), and continue to build your menus and burn.

You might want to read through From Camcorder to DVD tutorial.

You can't have Use First Clip As Introductory Video if you only have one video file in the burn timeline. If you want a video to play before the menu, it has to be a seperate video file.
