DVDMF5 messed up my Windows Media Player

Post by HYSTERIAH »

After I installed Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5, my Windows Mediaplayer 10 won't playback MPEG-2 files propriate anymore. Especially "352x576" resolution files plays back verry strange in WMP10 after installing MovieFactory 5 :-(

I guess it's caused by the "Ulead MPEG2 decoder" that has taken over the playback of my MPEG-2 files for WMP10. How can I change the default MPEG2 decoder for WMP... or disable the "Ulead MPEG2 decoder" for WMP?

I found this post in the forum:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... dia+player
It seems like a verry similar problem... but the method from "Jeff7" doesn't seem to work for MovieFactory 5 :-(

Please help me get rid of the Ulead MPEG2 decoder!
Thank You

WMP and MF5 can co-exist harmoniously, without any special tweaks - as they do on my system.

If Jeff7's fix doesn't work for you (BTW, it depends on ulDVDVideo.ax being in the default location), then I'd suggest upgrading to WMP 11 - my guess is that that would reset the MPEG-2 decoder for WMP.

(Another suggestion - complete your System Information in your profile. Clicking on this button: Image will take you to a short tutorial explaining how to find and complete that information. This will help others to help you more effectively.)

If you have MPEG2 playback problems, installing WMP11 will most likely not fix them. Why? Because MS does not include any MPEG2 decoding with the free WMP.

Look for and download the MS Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility. This will easily allow you to choose another codec on your system or revert your changes without needing advanced knowledge.

Other notes...

Not the same problem, but worth repeating because I have no solution except to prevent InterVideo AVControlSDK from being installed...

The MF5 (and after purchasing then also MF5+) installation breaks MPEG2 playback in WMP on my system. I also have WMP10. The system was previously running and working with an older version of InterVideo WinDVD.

Playing any MPEG2 file then crashes WMP after playback ends.

It was not MF5 itself but the InterVideo AVControlSDK that is normally installed with it, that breaks my system. I also tried uninstalling my old WinDVD before installing MF5. It didn't help and I've gone thru this several times.
If I exclude AVControlSDK (by removing its folder before installing MF from the self-unpacked setup tree) then MPEG2 playback does not break.
MF5+ includes WinDVD7 Silver and the same problem is introduced if I let it install InterVideo AVControlSDK, even with the new WinDVD installed from the same company (InterVideo). Something is misbehaving or not functioning in the chain of codecs when that InterVideo SDK is on my system, so I have banned it until I hear of a fix. But there is hardly any fix to be found on the InterVideo site (yeah, right, I should pay to upgrade non-working software? no thanks).

I have also very recently noticed that WMP no longer plays all my authored VOB files from other authoring software (not MF). They do play in the WinDVD7 delivered with MF5+ so I'm not going to waste more time investigating yet another crappy incompatibility.

Well! That is really interesting, Henry.

When I said that WMP and MF5 co-exist harmoniously on my system, it's a system where the InterVideo AVControlSDK is not installed - because my MF5 installation ran into a problem that cause it to abort the InterVideo AVControlSDK installation.

I've been intending for quite some time to do a clean reinstall so I get the InterVideo AVControlSDK installed as well (though I know that it's only used for capture and I don't use MF5 for that anyway) but your experience tells me that if I want to keep my WMP 11 playing nicely, I should leave MF5 just as it is!

InterVideo flaky

Hi,
if I want to keep my WMP 11 playing nicely, I should leave MF5 just as it is!
Well, I don't know. Obviously the InterVideo AVcontrolSDK does not cause havoc on every PC, otherwise there would be more posts about it. But my feeling is that your system is better without it and some of its kin.
my MF5 installation ran into a problem that cause it to abort the InterVideo AVControlSDK installation.
Aha! This is interesting for me because it is further proof that this thing is not mature.

More indications of sloppiness or unfriendly behavior...
Have you looked at InterVideo's support offer? Or tried to find any technical info on the stuff they install on your system?
You can't find their SDK there, as if they don't even make it.

Have you seen their InformationService? The InformationService is a hidden installation executable (...\Utilities\WinDVD\3rdPartyApp\) normally installed with the program (WinDVD, DVDcopy, ...). They "quietly" install a service just to check for WinDVD updates? Not a word on their site.

I looked for fixes manually. I find exactly 1 patch... for WinDVD8, and it includes this:
* Fixes WMP playback issue
Well, what about all the previous versions, or the version I have: WinDVD7? There are numerous builds released (7.0 DXVA Bnn.nnn) and higher versions than I received (B27.175), but not 1 word is mentioned on their site. Their idea of a download is... to sell you an update. So what is the InformationService for?

InterVideo: This is horrible behavior. Maybe it'll get better after getting enough bad publicity. I can help with you with that if you like.

Hi, and thanks a lot snoops :-)

I downloaded "Softella DirectShow Filter Manager" and I set the "Intervideo Video Decoder" filter merit to "unlikely" and I also found my favorite decoder "ATI MPEG Video decoder" and set that filter merit to "preferred"... and VIOLA... after rebooting my computer, my Windows Media Player is back to normal again :D :D :D

I guess this will be a good way to solve this problem for other users also ;-)

Thaks again guys

Yes, a good outcome indeed - thanks, Henry.

And now just one more thing, HYSTERIAH - please complete your System Information in your profile. Clicking on this button: Image will take you to a short tutorial explaining how to find and complete that information. This will help others to help you more effectively in the future, should you ever need it :(

"Softella DirectShow Filter Manager"
OK, but you need to be careful with such tools because you can easily mess up your system if you don't know what you're doing.

That is why I said:
Look for and download the MS Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility. This will easily allow you to choose another codec on your system or revert your changes without needing advanced knowledge.
This little tool from MS shows you the WMP compatibilty and only shows the MPEG-2 decoder. It doesn't have any advanced options. You just choose the other decoder (if there is one installed) and you're done. You don't need to know about merit flags of codecs.
