no sound on DVD
studio 9 se dvd
I have burnt my projects to DVD+R and DVD-R. when played back on a pc they are fine. However, when replayed in my normal ,Harman/kardon DVD25 player , there is no sound. I have burnt discs before with other sofware and DVD+R have been fine.
Also I have imported from DV tape camera, via s video. The quality is not that good, is there a better way?
thanks

The only way to get good high quality transfer from camcorder to PC is via firewire (aka 'i-link', 'DV port', 'IEEE1394') any other method WILL give a loss of quality.
Please read this article :-
http://www.jonesgroup.net/media/vsone.htm
it is written for NTSC so you will need to make appropriate changes to the settings as you use PAL - and 720x576 resolution and 25fps frame speed - but the procedure is the same.
S-video cables do not support sound - did you also have the red and white phono (RCA) cables connected ??
What format sound did you burn to the DVD - it's no good using Dolby for instance if your DVD player cannot support Dolby - other problems arise with other sound formats.

I have copied my project settings below:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
There is no option to change to or from Dolby. Could it be the speed of the DVD+R that is not compatible?
Also I tried to caputre DV from my camera via IEEE 1394 port but there is no option in version 9 to set to DV from this route. Do I need to upograde to version 10?
Thanks for the help

After you have clicked on 'Share' >> 'Create disc' - in the new window which opens you will see a little cog-wheel type icon down in the bottom left corner - click on it - In the 'Project Settings window' which opens click on "Change MPEG settings" then choose 'Customise' - a 'Video Save Options' window will open and under the 'Compression' tab you will see a setting box against 'Audio Format' - if you do not have the choices 'Dolby Digital / MPEG audio / LPCM Audio' in there then there is something very wrong with your installation.
Of course there is an option to capture as DV when using firewire in version 9 - in fact most of the time you do not even need to select it - having your camcorder connected and switched on in 'play' mode when in 'Capture' mode will automatically select DV for you.
If it is not automatically selected then you can manually select it - click on 'Capture' then "Capture Video" and in the top left corner of your screen you will see a drop down against 'Format' - choose DV - again if you do not have a total of 7 (seven) capture options including DV AVI MPEG etc. then there is something wrong with your installation.
It might also be a good idea if you read this post :-

AH - should have read your first post properly - sorry - I now note you have an 'SE' version which will explain why you do not have the Dolby option - it is not available in free versions.
I still cannot see though why you do not have audio on the DVD when played in your DVD player - perhaps someone else has some ideas.

How is the DVD Player hooked up to the sound system? Some connection types might not play mpeg audio properly. I recall a note about this in one of the Ulead manuals (might have been a few versions ago, I don't exactly remember where I saw it...).
Try hooking up the RCA Audio outputs on your DVD Player to a speaker system to see if the audio is there...

George

If there is no DV capture option, there is definitely something wrong with your installation. Video Studio in all its versions, including the SE ones, is primarily made to capture DV from DV cameras using firewire.
I too cannot work out why you would not have audio if your source audio is mpeg layer 2. Have you checked in your DVD player's setting for what audio is set?
In addition, the project settings you cite are the default ones. You should change the Field Order from Frame Based to Lower Field First if you do manage to capture via Firewire. Heaven knows what it should be for S-video capture, but I would guess and say it is Upper Field First.
Getting the field order wrong would result in choppy video and jaggies in straight lines during panning or high speed when played back on a normal TV. But it should not cause any difficulty in the audio.

You stated earlier that you tried capturing via firewire, in order to do that you must have a Firewire port or card in your PC too. So you don't have a Firewire port on your PC? So you are using an ADSTech capture device? If so how is it connected, or is it a PC card? Is this what you're using to capture?howardkoch wrote:what would happen if there was no firewire port installed on the pc? would the option still be there?
I cannot even get on to the Ulead site as it is so slow
Adstech DVD Xpress DX2
If so then you are not able to capture / transfer to DV format. What you should do like others that use this device is, use the supplied software (CapWiz), and capture to DVD MPG-2. Then use VS to edit.
