Can audio be fixed in an avi file?

I'm fairly new to MSP7 so don't know about availability of plug-ins etc but one way would be to do it as you already tried - extract the audio clean it up in an external audio editor and then re-import it.
Most decent audio editors have hiss/pop/click type removers - Cool Edit Pro was one I used to work with.
I have not actually done this with MSP7 however but understand it should work ok.
Good luck.

Where you find the crackles?
Directly on the video tape (play it directly to a TV) or after importing to your PC ?
I assume the Mike of the camera becomes to close to the speakers or got to much sound pressure for its membrane (what is a typical effect in such cases)
If its on the tape you only can (after importing to the PC) export the sound tracks to a wave file and try to declicker with an external program alike such programs to transfer music from disq players onto CD.
Afterwards you put the wafefile back to your timeline and disable the original sound tracks.
Please note: There will be no connection to the viedo, what will cause some difficulties with editing and composing. Therefor you should render the video with diabled original sound and the refurbished sound to a new file, which you can edit better then.
