I have installed Video studio 8, 9 and 10 several times, but each time I try and start the program it crashes.
Says something like '... has ecountered a problem and has been shut down ...' , then the application name of FFDSHOW.AX is included in an error report
Any ideas what's wrong??

First, welcome to the forum.
It's a common issue with FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder among video programs. If you search FFDShow.ax in Google then you will know what I'm talking about.
Remove FFDShow decoder then the crash issue should be solved.
