MD,
I'm glad to hear you have resolved those equipment problems!
Re Divx players, Make sure the Divx Certified DVD players are certified to playback resolutions up to 1920x1080p because for some wacko reason, the Divx HD profile only extends up to 1280x720p.
That's why we have to select the Unconstrained Profile to transcode to 1920x1080.
BTW, the JVC unit that you found may be the big brother to my IODATA AVLP2.

Yep, you have the same one that I have IOData AVLP2 - $250. It does hesitate when I playback Mpeg2@25Mbps from a DVD but does better if you playback from an external hard drive (7200rpm) so I think the DVD is I/O bound.
Note that both DVD and USB2 hard drive have a 4GB file size limit (FAT limit) so when I want to playback longer movies, I transcode to Divx HD 1920x1080p @ 8Mbps.
I suspect that the streaming HDV over a LAN connection from the PC may not be designed very well. BTW, I upgraded my firmware to October of 2005 and left it there because it seems to work fine and others complained that later firmware broke the Divx playback.
I truly doubt that the DVI interface is any better than component connection.
Edit: There is a "filter modification" for the AVLP2 that was supposed to increase the bandwidth of the output filtering circuit for the component interface. (This may be the origin of the bad rap for component. ) It involves unsoldering some surface-mount components. I did it without checking the resolution first with an ISO res chart. It seems to me that it is over driving the Y channel on my Pioneer HDTV set.

MD,
Why fiddle with the audio? I use the audio as-is for mpg HDV
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
and convert to Dolby for the Divx transcodes.
Don't try to create TS file structure for DVDs - just burn .mpg or divx HD files as ordinary data files on standard DVDs. The AVLP2 will play them back.
I'm glad to hear that you notice a weakness in the LP2's component video output. Please run a resolution test on some HD Video before and after you do the filter mod. Or just compare the HD res on the PC with that on the HDTV with a res chart.
Firmeware: I am running October 2005 firmware. Sounds as if IOData is shipping an upgraded unit. Maybe your unit will also be a bit more responsive to the remote control...
