New Camera - Choppy Capture!!

Post by Sinfamous »

Well, it's christmas, I got a new DV Camcorder, and It's great. I loaded Ulead Video Studio 9 SE which came with it, and for some reason or other, the Quick Scan feature isn't enabled. So, I tried the Video Capture feature, which seemed to work, however the Output is very choppy compared to what I get during playback mode on my camera. I've tried messing with the settings, was trying to convert to Mpeg 2, anyone have any suggestions on the settings? Under Options I chose 640x480, Mpeg II video, should I do VBR or CBR? I'm really a newbie. But it's a nice camera, but the capture output is horrible!! What's the deal? Please help!

Merry Christmas Sinfamous, congratulations on getting a DV camcorder,

The best way to learn is by reading, and we just so happen to have some great free material for you..:)

You might want to read through From Camcorder to DVD tutorial.

Recommended Procedures have been developed to help guide you through the mine-field of video editing, as it pertains to Ulead's VideoStudio Programs. They can be viewed here:
Recommened Procedures Updated Version

That should get you started. Also be aware that an SE version is a trimmed down freebie. There are somethings that are disabled, you will not be able to access. One being the ability to use Dolby Digital, commonly called AC3. Dolby is fee based, therefore is excluded from the freebies.

Well, I'm trying to follow these instructions, and the first thing I did, was change the format to DV, which it did, but only for a moment, then It automatically switched it to AVI. Not sure why, I've installed all the drivers.

Which one of the above are you trying to follow? I recommend Steve's tutorial on Camcorder to DVD. There are screen shots, which tend to lessen confusion.

I think it is switching back due to how you are trying to capture. DV is commonly captured/transferred using a Firewire (Sony's iLink, IEEE1394). What are you using to get the video onto your computer from the camcorder?

Ok, I think what you've said is right. I am trying to Capture via USB, which I guess is a big no no. I just used a Best Buy gift card to purchase a new Dynex Firewire card. I hope this works!

I think you are going to find a world of difference with the Firewire. The quality will be so much better, and far less headaches then trying USB..

Good Luck!!
