I have a screen recording program I use to do software demos. It generates .avi files.
After editing the .avi files with MSP8 I want to create a .wmv file using MSP8. I select Windows Media Video as the "Save as type:". Here's where I need help.
Clicking the "Options" button gives me a window with three tabs, but not the same tabs as described in the users' manual or help facility. There is Video Editor, Profile, and Attributes (no "general" tab as described).
Under Profile the profile I want is not one of the choices in the drop down box. So I click on "Customize" and I see several profiles that will work, such as, "Screen Video/Audio Medium (CBR).
How do I SELECT AND USE THAT PROFILE? I can copy it, remove it, or make a new profile, but how do I select it to use it to encode my wmv file using the Video Save Options feature? Also I created my own profile using "New" -- it basically uses Windows Media Audio 9 voice and Windows Media Video 9 screen. I created and saved that, no problem. I can see it with a .prx extension in the profiles list. Is there a limit to what can display in that drop down box? Should I delete other profiles I don't want, or copy them into some other folder?
Ideally I'd like to make this a template. Probably this is some newby thing I am just missing -- I've used these products for several years and am pretty comfortable with editing and creating DVDs but I've until now been able to use one of the "default" profiles available in the "Profiles" drop down box. Where does the "Profiles" drop down box on the "Profile" tab of "Video Save Options" get populated from? I see all the profiles in the drop down box, PLUS the others that are missing and the one I created, all stored in "Windows Media Components\Encoder". It seems quite a few profiles are missing -- or I'm missing how to access them. Is there a means of "registering" these within the program or something?
Thanks for any help!

Creating and then using a new "Encoding Profile"
If I recall correctly, MSP7 would only partially save Windows Media profiles. It might be the same with MSP8.
One way to fix the problem is download the free Windows Media Encoder software, and make the profile in that. If you can output an edited AVI without any re-rendering, you might want to do so and encode the edit outside of MSP. If there's too much additional rendering (e.g. titles, filters) render your WMV within MSP.
That same Windows Encoder software has its own screen recording capability too.
