burning tivo extracted mpegs

Post by enemy combatant »

I have a directivo and am using tytools to extract the .ty files and then multiplexing them to mpeg2. The only way I am able to get Movie factory 5 to burn them (without spending hours converting) is to use DVDpatcher to change the header from 420x420 to 720x480. I am under the impression that this simply fools movie factory into thinking the mpeg is dvd compatible. That seems to work fine but the resulting dvd has a strange strobe effect on the menu motion buttons. The movie plays fine, Its just screwed up in the menu. Any suggestions on a fix for this or an alternative way to burn these tivo mpegs would be very much appreciated. Sorry about the typo, meant to say 480x480, not 420x420.

420x420 is not an allowed resolution for DVD, so MF is behaving correctly.

Have you tried playing the movies with the hacked header in a DVD player?
If they play, you could just use a text menu (no thumbnails) or try a thumbnail menu with motion deactivated. Or no menu at all.

I wouldn't use resolutions that are outside the DVD spec.

Thanks for the response, the dvds play fine in the two players I've tried them on (Philips HTS3410D and an Emerson dvd/vcr unit). I guess I will use text menus or a thumbnail menu with motion deactivated as you suggested. I just thought it was odd that the motion thumbnail was so garbled looking but the movie played flawlessly. If 480x480 is non dvd compliant then should I try to re-encode it somehow and if I do would that degrade the quality? I also noticed in the project settings tab in movie factory there is an option to "change mpeg settings..." If I select this, then select "customize" in the drop-down menu, there is a grayed out area that says "user-defined" to change the frame size. Why is this option grayed out?

I see, thanks for clearing that up for me. The audio from the tivo mpegs is 48000 Hz, 16 bit. When you say you burn the same framesize in MF without any external programs, do you mean that you are'nt even patching the first header of the mpeg to something compliant?

I read the manual...Says nothing about being able to burn 480x480 without spending hours converting to something "compliant".

Thank you Maddrummer3301! That worked perfectly. The motion thumbnail buttons are back to normal too.
