Video Studio 9 SE vs Full Version

Post by DiscCoasterPro »

Hi all. I will be helping a friend through some minor video editing who lives out of state and has never done any NLE before. He purchased some type of analogue to digital converter for his home movies on VHS.

Assuming these captures to mpeg go smoothly, Ulead Video Studio 9 SE came with this hardware. I do have my old version of VS9 full with manuals, but I'm curious what is left out of the SE version. I would hate to be on the phone frustrated at his inability to access something on screen that I didn't know wasn't even there :)

thanks,

As far as I am aware, the main things missing from the SE edition are some of the menu templates and the ability to use Dolby AC-3. If all it says is VS9 SE, then I think it should be OK for burning DVDs. If it includes 'Basic' the ability to burn DVDs is usually not there -- though you can still produce a DVD-compliant mpeg-2 and burn it to disc in another program.

My understanding is slightly different from Kens - but the problem is that there appears to be a variety of SE versions according to what hardware it was supplied with.

Anyrate I thought (and I could be wrong) that if the version number was "9 SE" then it would be unlikely that it would burn a DVD - in order to burn a DVD it must be specifically called "9 SE DVD" .

But as Ken has said every version should be able to produce a compliant mpeg2 file which another application would burn to DVD.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to get more info. Perhaps he can email me the PDF file off the cd. It did come with some type of usb external mpeg capture device so hopefully a burning module is included.

thanks!

Not meaning or wanting to confuse the issue further, I had thought that 'SE DVD' was only used with VS6 and 7 SE. Perhaps with 8 also, but I didn't think so with 9...

As Brian says, though, there are so many SE versions out there, and Ulead doesn't appear to have any *public* record of what is in -- or more to the point, not in -- them!

There are mainly 2 SE editions of VideoStudio 9 and earlier versions:

SE Basic:

This edition has the ability to burn VCD / SVCD only and does not include MPEG-2 rendering capability. And it might only have the Movie Wizard component and not have the DV Wizard / Video Editor components.

SE DVD:

This edition has the ability to burn VCD / SVCD / DVD and include the MPEG-2 rendering capability. And it might have DV / Movie Wizard components but not have the Video Editor component.

For Dolby AC-3 support, it's only available in the full version.

But due to the requirements from the OEM customers yes it might have some feature changes. You can know what edition you have via the Help->About box.

I'm new here and new to a lot of this stuff.

I actually have and just started working with the VideoStudio 9 SE DVD that came with my DVD Xpress. Can anyone tell me where I can get other Menu Templates for this program other than the Christmas one that came with it?

I'm in the process of creating DVD's from all of our old home movies and I don't want to have a Christmas theme at the beginning of every one. Any help would be great.
