"convert step got some problems"
I am trying to complete a larger project that was too big for Ulead to handle as a single file (2 1/2 hrs), so I edited it down into two pieces. I was able to burn 4 copies of the first half successfully. I then went back and attempted to burn the second half and two of the four DVDs were either bad burns or bad DVDs. (I think they were bad burns--problems in the same spot on both disks, although I could be wrong . . .) I restarted the machine, went back and remade my menus, and tried to burn again. I cannot get it to burn this file again--I keep getting the error message "convert step got some problems". I then went back to the original file and reconverted it to MPEG format (just in case there was a problem with the original MPEG) and tried again to burn it this morning. I got the same error message. I was hoping to give this project as a Christmas gift, and have no idea where to go from here to get this thing completed. Any suggestions?

It would be useful if you could give us the properties of this mpeg-2 file, and confirm that 'do not convert compliant mpeg files' is checked. As I am sure you realise, that particular message indicates Video Studio thinks it is dealing with an mpeg-2 which is not fully DVD-compliant and is trying, unsuccessfully in this case, to convert it to full compliance.
I would also be useful to have some background on where the original video came from and what edits you made, and anything else about the work flow which might be relevant.
Please also fill in your computer details in the System button below.

I did check--the "do not convert compliant MPEG files" box is checked. The MPEG that I am trying to burn is 1 hr 3 min long and is 2.99GB. It is a collection of DV clips from our Sony camcorder, MPEGs from our Sony digital camera, and a photo slideshow done in Quicktime. There is a page-turn transition between each clip and 5 songs playing back-to-back under the photo slideshow. I edited several pieces of longer video down into small clips for the majority of the project and added the mpegs and slideshow at the end. I have made sure that all my settings match the "Recommended Procedures", both when converting the VSP file to MPEG and when trying to burn the MPEG to DVD. I also successfully burned 2 copies a couple of days ago and cannot get it to burn again.

This error message has perhaps one of the most troublesome to solve because the error message doesn't explain why it fell over.
I recently had this error and discovered that it was due to overlapping buttons in a DVD menu. This same error can indicate problems with the source files or incorrect settings or a fault with the computer itself.
To solve this type of error is a long drawn out process of elimination.
If you have followed the recommended procedure as per
This post
(One of the most important items is to create an MPEG2 File BEFORE you enter the Share | Create Disc Module) then you need to start making changes to your DVD Menu structure, one item at a time.
To cut down on the amount of time taken, temporarily turn OFF any motion effects such as motion background and motion thumbnails. This will enable the menu making process to work quicker. Burn to a Hard Drive Folder to avoid wasting any blank discs.
Follow a methodical approach and firstly try a different menu template - to eliminate the one being used as a problem. Then try differnet (or no) background sound for the menu.
Hopefully you will be able to find the cause of this niggling error.
Also ensure that you have checked the Ulead Website for and installed any update patches.

DVD burning/playback issues
I have a few more questions based on the last posting . . . thank you for you suggestions.
First, I was trying to determine if I was having an issue within Ulead VS10+ or with my machine in general. I went back and tried to reburn a project that I successfully burned a month or so ago and the burn stalled at 28%. Do you think there is any likelihood that a recent Windows update may have caused an issue with my burner or the Ulead software since I have had no burning issues until now?
Also, you suggested burning to a hard drive folder so as not to waste disks, but when I burn from Ulead it only offers my CD burner (D drive) and DVD burner (E drive) as burn locations. Is there a way around this?
I went to the "DVD burning/playback issues" link you sent me and saw the issue concerning the Sony rootkit. My CD burner is Sony, so is it safe to assume that there is a rootkit on my machine? If so, is it likely that it might cause interference sporadically (since I have had no trouble burning projects until now) or would it do so consistently? Will I be creating more issues if I attempt to remove it?
Finally, should I try to uninstall and reinstall my VS 10+ or is that just a really bad idea?

To burn to a hard drive folder please view the following screen shot from VS10+

If you think a recent update to the Windows Operating system was the culprit then try System Restore to a date before that update (You can later reverse the system update if that was not the cause)
You can also check the Windows Error Messages:
Checking Windows Event Log for error messages:
check the windows Event Log:-
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System
You will find a red circle with a white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link also contains some hidden code appertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.
I would use the uninstall/re-install method only after exhausting other possibilities first.

Convert got some problems
I have been encountering this error more and more recently, and I've been trying to figure out why. And I think I've figured it out.
Lately I've been trying more complicated DVD menus - ones including motion, background images, and audio. I think I end up with more problems in this area than I do with my project file being the 'wrong' format.
I was trying all the tricks to solve my problem. I tried creating a disc from my VSP file, or I'd create both DV and DVD (.avi and .mpg) files and use them instead. Each time I would run into a problem with the "Convert got some problems" when I tried to burn the project. Usually, after some frustration and the ump-teenth time creating my menu, it would finally work. And now that I think back on it all, my frustration resulted in less-complicated menus.
So after reading this thread, I went back to a troublesome project and tried simply removing the music (which was supplied by ULead by the way), and it all worked just fine.
All along I thought it was a problem with the files I was creating, but in reality it is a problem with the ULead-supplied files. I hope the ULead team provides a more useful, and more professional message in the future.
My suggestion, first burn your big video files to a very simple DVD with a simple menu. It's always good to have another backup anyway, right? And then try adding your menus. If you get the dreaded error, try removing a piece at a time. Oh, and the above suggestion to write to an .iso file instead of a disc is a good idea. It only burns hard-drive space which can be easily reclaimed.
Good luck. I hope the information helps.

finally got it burned . . .
I did FINALLY get this darn thing to burn yesterday after fiddling with it on and off throughout the holidays. Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions. I thought I'd share in case anyone else encountered this problem . . . I seemed to have had a two-fold problem: (1) the motion menus (as had been suggested) and (2) less available hard drive space than I realized. I was creating several projects simultaneously as holiday gifts and, even though my machine is less than a year old, I used up a lot more memory space than I initially realized. So, when I made the menus on my large project less complicated and dumped some unnecessary files off of my machine I finally got a good burn. (Both were required.)
