VS10 trial slow converting??

Post by jlrosine »

Hey all, I have been using VS 7 SE for a long time, and finally have the need to upgrade to 10. Here's my scenario: I had 3 VHS tapes from my father, and wanted to create some dvds with the nice chapter menus. The old MF 2.5 and VS7 would capture and convert my video typically in an hour or less (roughly 48mins of VHS). Now with the newer versions, I can't even capture without getting an mpeg codec error. What I've been doing is capturing with windows movie maker at the highest allowable WMV format, and then using VS10 to convert and burn the DVD.

My problem with the process is that it takes VS10 about 2 hours (or a little less) to convert and burn the dvd (including creating dvd folders and ISO), from a 48 minute video. The video is in windows media format, around 770mb, 720, 2.1mb. The output is about 3gb on the dvd.

My system is an AMD X2 4600 (2 - 2.4ghz), 2gb DDR (Corsair ddr550), Hauppauge PVR 150 MCE PCI card (composite capture), Audigy 2 ZS audio capture, WinXP Pro SP2, latest trial from Ulead Site.

My WMV file that it's converting is on an external 7,200 rpm drive that runs full usb 2.0 (tested). My working folder is on a 10000rpm Raptor drive, and my OS/VS10 is on another 10000rpm Raptor drive.

VS10 only uses around 52% cpu during the entire conversion/burn....so it's not even coming close to utilizing what it could...or should IMO. Also, the hard drives seem to have little activity in the whole process.

Why does this take so long, and why does VS not use the available resources? I might as well just have a POS computer 3 years older than my current rig....makes no sense to me.

Any thoughts or help on how I could make the process faster? 2 hours for a less than 1 hour DVD is not really acceptable to me with the suppa dupa computers we have nowadays.

Ideally I would like to capture into the correct format, not WMV, but VS10 fails and errors miserably with codec errors....need to figure that one out on another day. I've only seen a handful of users with the same error, all with the PVR Hauppauge and no fix.

The Hauppage TV cards record in MPEG2 format which is the stuff that DVD VOB files are made from. Try capturing to MPEG2 rather than WMV.
I use WinTV2000 to record from my Hauppage PCI PVR.

like I mentioned, I WOULD try to capture in mpeg through VS10 or 7, but since the upgrade someone, either hauppauge or VS, screwed something up on my system. I get this error when I try to capture the video.

MPEG capture does not accept HCW2 codec. Please select a suitable code from the video format list. It is recommended to use codec(1) YUV codec first, then (2) RGB-24 codec.

Sounds like you are not following the Recommended Procedure.
