Adding audio... is there a trick to timing/fading?

Post by Scooterspal »

I normally add background music to my film transfers on the DV master. I'm trying to get away with this extra step and use MF's "add audio" feature but I'm not having much luck.

The problem is the timing of the fade at the end of the video. If I set it to end using the "]" marker by typing in the actual end time of the picture (prior to going to black for several seconds) it still seems to go to the end of the black and fade out. The more I try to move it back the more it wants to do it's own thing.

...further notes, here...

What I seemed to be getting, if I did place the fade based on the length of the picture prior to when it goes into black, was a fade around that point and then the music came back on until the black ran out and then just stopped.

What I have since tried is to place a section of blank (silent) mp3 audio track after the music track (Music Track is #1 in the Add Audio dialog box and Blank Track is #2). I then set the Music Track length to the actual picture length (before black) and then click on Fade Out.

The result is it does cut off at that point and not come back on but the fade does not work.

Not as nice as my old manual fade outs but it will do for now. At least the music cuts off with the picture and stays off.

If anyone has any suggestions, please reply with what you are doing to make this work.

I spoke (typed) too soon. While it seemed to work using the player inside MF5 it does not after the DVD is burned and played on my trusty Sony set top. It still started to loop the music as before.

I have reverted to cutting back the black to just 1 second after the picture ends and just adding the music track with no fade and no timing adjustment.

It cuts off at the moment the black ends and does not loop.

Bummer.

It sounds like you are adding audio and fades to the actual content clips, not just the menu.

In this case I can't really help because I do all my DV editing in a video editor after capturing the footage, including all trimming, titles, audio, music, transitions, whatever. This is by far the best and easiest way to edit and create the actual content.

Anyway, you should at least try PCM WAV audio instead of MP3. Even in my video editor, the use of MP3 (depending on compression and variable bitrate, etc.) can cause sections to go out of sync in the final AVI export of the timeline.

Hey Henry:

I also do my DV editing using other software (Premiere) but my needs here are rather simple. Add a continuous background music track (that runs about 2:05 hours) to a specific length of continuous video. The music has a fade in already within it so I only need that fade out at the end of the picture video.

Your point about using the original wave file seems interesting. That this may result in a timing problem... a drift... it this what you are saying?

I actually did a conversion from wave to mp3 thinking this would perhaps speed up the rendering time. I will now try laying in the original wave file to see if it will do a fade in the correct spot.

Thanks!

Hi,
That this may result in a timing problem.
Yes, this happens in my editor with certain MP3 files. I began using only PCM WAV audio in my editor many years ago to avoid the problems.

With respect to MF it was just an idea. Something else could be broken. But worth trying PCM WAV instead.
