VS10+ Playback in Preview Window is Choppy

Post by lajc01 »

Playback in the preview window is very choppy & sometimes stops completely although I continue to hear the audio. I enable Smart Proxy, but every time I open VS10+ it tells me that it's not enabled & I have to enable it again. I have an AMD 2800+ processor & 2GB of RAM on my PC. Thanks in advance for any possible solutions.:?:

We need to know WAY more than you have provided. For starters, why are you trying to use Smart Proxy? Are you capturing and trying preview HD video? If not, what is the format of the video and where and how did you capture it? Right click on one of the files within Video Studio and copy down its properties here. Are you using XP?

Thanks for your help. Sorry about the lack of details. I tried using Smart Proxy because I thought it would provide smoother playback. My capture is from a MiniDV tape played back on my camcorder & is not HD. The file properties are as follows:

File:
File Format: Microsofr AVI Files--OpenDML
File Size: 2,735,297 kb
Frame Rate: 29,970 fps
Duration: 751,952 seconds
Data Rate: 3636.80 kbps

Video:
Compression: DV Video Encoder--Type 2
Attributes: 24 Bits, 720x480, 16:9
Toyal Frames: 22,536 Frames

Audio:
Compression: PCM
Attributes: 32,000, 16 Bit Stereo
Total Samples: 24,062,469 samples

Forget Smart Proxy - if it is useful at all, it is for editing high definition video with very slow computers. Use the standard Recommended Procedure at the bottom of this post, which, BTW, recommends capturing DV as Type 1 - not Type II.

OK, I'll try it. Thanks and have a happy holiday.

Yes -- I think the encoder Type is your problem. For some reason, on installation, Video Studio seems to default to Type 2 -- at least it always does on my computer. But if your computer is not overly well endowed with resources, it will have trouble capturing using Type 2. The result is usually jerky and erratic video and/or audio. If you go into the Options icon on the Capture page, with capture set for DV, then you will have the Option to change the Encoder type from 2 to 1. This almost invariably works as Type 1 imposes no demands on your computer.

(And for your information, Type 1 captures -- or really transfers -- DV video from your camera in its original full quality in a single stream which includes both the audio and video. Type 2 uses different algorithms and, although capturing a single file, it separates the video and audio into separate streams within that single file. Type 2 is typically used by programs which are more at the professional end of the market where people will usually have computers that can handle it with no problems. Adobe Premiere Pro is one such program. But for all intents and purposes, Type 1 gives indistinguishable quality in both audio and video.)

Thanks again, I'm going to test it out this weekend to see if that was causing the problem. I also printed up the recommended procedures and I'm going to follow those as you suggested also.
