DV captures as one long avi, no breaks between segments

Post by kapaa-papa »

Okay, what am I doing wrong with this super fantastic version 10, maybe I'm missing a setting but when I capture my video it dumps in as one long avi file but I recall the first time I did this VS automatically separated segments making it real easy for me to plug in transitions.

Also, is there a way to see a time stamp on DV once it's been captured, I like to see the date, this way I can create titles such as "Lion's Beach - June 1965". Is there a setting or something for this?

I know, it's repetitive and annoys me too but what would you want us to base any advice on?

Please read this http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8959

and this http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27

There are a few users here who recommend to capture in one large file and split by scene in VS10, I prefer to split at the time of capture. What works best may also depend on what the source and capture properties are. That's exactly the bit that we don't know nothing about with your problem.

You are doing fine. When the video file is in the Edit timeline, you can split the whole thing by scene, if you want to.

Thanks JCHunter, so it sounds like there's an option to split the video out on the timeline but I'm not seeing it. Unless this has to be established before I capture the video. I'm also not seeing an option to view the date/time stamp. Heinz is basically saying read over the whole manual or spend 30 minutes searching to see if anyone else already posted this question yet I'm not even sure which key words to use to hopefully find a solution. I'm new to Ulead, was told ver10 is the best around, so I'm using the downloaded trial version to see if it's worth purchasing. I'll go back and see if I can find out where to download this manaul. When I use Microsoft Movie Maker it does the above two mentioned options with ease. I'm guessing something as expensive as vs10 would be able to easily to this as well.

Never mind Heinz  , you can save whatever wise-crack reply your fingers were about to type up, after I went into preferences and changed the UI layout I now see a screen with options such as Split by Scene. I guess that would have been a helpful hint from you, if you has said "try using key words 'split by scene' " as to "try reading the manual idoit". so much for Merry Christmas.

Maybe I'll keep digging and find out how to see date stamps for each scene since I still haven't found that trial manual or the 'help' button on within VS. Or maybe a friendly forum user will guide me in the right direction :D

If capturing DV, then in the capture window, just to the right of dead centre of the default screen, you will see a small check box 'Split by Scene' if DV is selected as the capture format. This only works with DV during capture; not mpeg. Or as John has suggested, once your video is captured in a single file, you have the option after capture to split by scene, and this time it works with both DV and mpeg-2.

There is no option to show the date and time stamp permanently, but then again, there never was for digital video in successive versions of Video Studio. You have to use third party software for that with digital video. However, you can have the date and time stamp show on the preview screen by checking the last box on File > Preferences > General ("Display DV Timecode on Preview Window").

And finally, if you hover your mouse over a file in the library pane, then a box will display parts of the properties, including the date and time the clip was taken/created.

Oh -- and you can download the manual from here http://www.ulead.com/vs/vstudio.pdf

Split by Scene / Seeing Date Stamp

Post by kapaa-papa »

Thank you Ken for the very helpful response. This exactly what I needed, simply to see date/time for title creation purposes. If this forum had a 'vote' button for Helpful Tech of the Week I'd be clicking away for you.

I'm very happy to see these features as simple as they are they can be basic to others. I do believe that I'm able to compile my finished product and burn it to DVD much faster than I can with Nero, about an hour or two faster. I might still buy this thing yet :?
