When converting an HDV .mpg to an HDV .m2t (required for export to tape), it seems MSP is fully re-rendering the file (it takes a lot of time).
Are we losing quality here or not (due to this conversion) ?
I would assume no quality loss but why is it so long then ????
Thanks
mpg -> m2t : is the HDV native quality altered ?
Re: mpg -> m2t : is the HDV native quality altered ?
YES. There will be a quality loss. Any time a COMPLETE render has to be done, there will be a quality loss. Unfortunetly the ulead HD capture plugin converts everything to mpeg... even when you want to go back to tape. It will not download/edit M2T. The capture converts to mpeg and you edit in mpeg, then the back to tape feature will convert it back to M2Tluc wrote:When converting an HDV .mpg to an HDV .m2t (required for export to tape), it seems MSP is fully re-rendering the file (it takes a lot of time).

There are programs that will download/edit in M2T, but we are not allowed to talk about other programs.... Do some research.
Whoah, wait... isn't this just converting between program and transport stream? eg, just kind of re-multiplexing? not actually rerendering the MPG video data?
This would be a problem if it actually re-renders/re-compresses
but it's not THAT slow so I don't think so..
it's already enough of a problem in that the MPG2 capture seems to lose all the recording metadata eg no more split-by-scene; plus, when I record back to tape, all the date/time info is lost.
I REALLY wish MSpro would edit TS transport stream files directly. Else, time to check out Vegas7...

Yeeeeahh... I'm in the process of switching over to V**** 7 for this reason. MSP really NEEDS to get serious about M2T streams. If it wasn't for this (and some minor 5.1 sound problems) then I would be more than satisfied with MSP. They need to really expand their input/render options!

Well, obviously the parts thet you edit will receive a full re render. I don't *think* the other perts would get a FULL re render but for sure there will be more render than necessary.luc wrote:Sorry but the answer is not clear...
does the MPG -> M2T conversion performed by MSP actually means a COMPLETE re-render ? or not ?
Thanks.
Look at it this way M2T is a mpg with some added transport info. When it is converted to mpg, the transport info is removed. When converting back to M2T, the info must be added again. Ideally speaking, smart render should only render the parts that have been changed or altered, but then this is not an ideal world.
I work a lot with MPG and M2V (a mpg video stream only), so they are very similar files..... one is with audio, one is without. When I load a mpg into another program (can't mention the name... against the rules), It takes about 2.5 hours to render about 45 minutes of HD. But if I load the same file as a M2V, same render settings, it takes about 25 minutes.... smartrender just zings right through it. The bottom line is that smartrender will only work to its fullest capacity when the input and output files are pretty the same. M2T and MPG are similar but not the same, so right off the bat, smartrender will not work to its fullest... now what level it actually works at in a case such as this... I would have no idea.
This is why I am moving away from MSP.... it can only genarate a mpeg and not a M2V, which is what my other program needs in order to operate most efficiently. With MSP, my work is pretty much being rendered twice... once in MSP, and once in the other program that I import to. The other program mentioned above does this perfectly... it's also capable of capture and edit in M2T... which, ideally speaking, is what someone wants when going back to tape.
