VS10+ Trial Version - Does it support HDV capture?

Post by toadman »

I searched the threads and could not find a definitve answer. I am trying to capture HDV from a Sony HC3 and the trial version will not recognize my camera in HDV out mode. Windows (XP sp2) does recognize my camera with VCR HDV/DV=HDV and i.LINK CONV=OFF. According to the device manager it shows as AV/C Tape Device. Only if I select VCR HDV/DV=DV and i.LINK CONV=ON will VS10+ find the camera. Is this a limitation of the trial version? Thanks for any help.

Capturing HDV should work in the trial version. Are you, by any chance, trying to capture using the USB connection? Use the firewire cable. See HD Tutorial http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13872

I am using a firewire connection. Works just fine in DV. But as soon as I switch the camera to HDV.... VS10+ will not recognize the camera. I read through the thread you referenced earlier....good stuff. Thanks.

From the Capture screen, when I go to Tools>Change Capture PlugIn I do not have 'ULEAD HDV PlugIn' as an option. Maybe that is the problem? I just installed the trial version today. Do I need to also install the HDV PlugIn? Thanks.

Also - I just did a HDV capture using HDVSplit to rule out my camera and OS and that worked fine.

Per the advice above, I just installed MF5+ Trial version and was able to capture HDV from my HC3 just fine. Although playback was slightly jerky in spots - which may be my PC (P4 2.8, 512 RAM, Nvidia GForce 5200). May be time to upgrade my PC for this HDV stuff.

Did you install MF before or after you tried to capture with VS10+ ??? There may be some interference between the two.

Check your HerCap.ini file(s) one for each user and see if it looks like this:
[CAPTURE_PLUGIN]
CurrentPlugin=4
CurrentDriver=0
DriverName=Sony -- HDV
CapturePluginPath1=VfwUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath2=DswUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath3=HotPlug.dll
CapturePluginPath5=WMFCap.dll
CapturePluginPath6=DswUleadMP4Cap.dll
CapturePluginPath7=HDVCap.dll
CapturePluginPath8=DVBTCapPlug.dll

[CAPTURE_SETTING]
ForceToUsePreviewMode=1
DisablePreviewAudioForDV=0
[Version]
ProfileVersion=1

I loaded MS5+ after I could not get VS10+ to work. Below are the settings from the HerCap.ini file from VS10+. I noticed that I do not have anything listed after DriverName where you have SONY--HDV. Not sure what that means....but looks to be an issue. Thoughts?

You have probably listed the HerCap.ini in your folder for "All Users" and my listing does not have Driver name = SONY --HDV listed there either. The one that governs VS operation for you is under your specific XP USER name. Do a search in Windows Explorer and you will probably find two such files.

I searched my c:\ drive and only found the one instance of HerCap.ini. It is located in the Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Video Studio 10\Ulead.dat folder. My PC is not setup with individual user profiles....just a single User account. Not sure why I can't capture HDV. I guess I would like to know if anyone else is able to capture HDV with the Trial version? Thanks.

Have you enabled your computer to show hidden files and folders? The file you are after is a hidden one. To show them, in My Computer or Windows Explorer, click on Tools along the top left of screen; then Folder Options > View > Advanced Settings, then in the second yellow folder, check 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'.

If that is your only copy of Hercap.ini, then the absence of the SONY HDV reference may be a clue as to what has gone wrong. My copies of hercap are located c:\Program files\Documents and Settings \ <user>\Application data\Ulead Systems\10.0

I do show the HDV capture plugin (HDVCap.dll) in Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Video Studio 10.0 but hercap.ini is not there. Edit: it is there in Ulead.dat folder.
Do you have HDVCap.dll??? If you do, that would indicate that Ulead meant for the trial version to do HDV capture.

Have you tried to reinstall? That would be the next step after carefully uninstalling and then removing all files and folders that have "Ulead" in the name.

OK....not sure why the find function did not find it....but I went into Documents and Settings \ <user>\Application data\Ulead Systems\10.0
and did find HerCap.ini. Here are the contents:

[CAPTURE_PLUGIN]
CurrentPlugin=3
CurrentDriver=0
DriverName=Sony -- MSDV
CapturePluginPath1=VfwUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath2=DswUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath3=HotPlug.dll
CapturePluginPath5=WMFCap.dll
CapturePluginPath6=DswUleadMP4Cap.dll
CapturePluginPath7=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
CapturePluginPath8=DVBTCapPlug.dll
DefaultPlugin=

[CAPTURE_SETTING]
ForceToUsePreviewMode=1
DisablePreviewAudioForDV=0
[Version]
ProfileVersion=1

For some reason CapturePluginPath7=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll is not correct. I believe this .dll is from my analog capture device that I used for my old Hi8 cam. Not sure why VS10+ added this here. I did locate the HDVCap.dll in the Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Video Studio 10.0 folder. I may just try to manually edit the file to match yours jchunter. I'll let you know if that works. Thanks for your help.

Ah Ha! So the infamous ADS Cirrus dll strikes again!

This is exactly what I experienced when I first started using VS10+ with my HC1. At that time I tried to manually hack hercap.ini but it did not work until I renamed ADSCirrusUSB.dll and then reinstalled VS10+. The original thread is here http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13753

Can't capture HDV - only DV

Hey toadman- Sounds like we're having the same problem. I have VS10 -not the trial version - but can only capture DV (by setting i.Link Conv to On). I also don't see the ULEAD HDV PlugIn.

Any luck?
