Going on Vacation, and I want to do some video editing of the vacation clips. Thinking about getting inexpensive core 2 duo laptop. What would be the minimal specs for such a lap top, to make the videostudio experience reasonably pleasant on such a machine? I am a bit concerned that the Hard drives on lap tops are slow, and perhaps there are other concerns that I haven't thought of.. yet.
Thanks in advance
Marshal.
intel core 2 duo lap top for video editing. What specs?

I think that just about any current laptop will work fine for this. Almost all of them will have a firewire connection.
Basic models will possibly have a 4200rpm drive. I had no problems capturing to DV type 1 avi with a cardbus firewire adpator on my wife's very basic old Celeron laptop, and editing the footage. Of course on that, transcoding to mpeg took forever.
If you're considering capturing direct to mpeg, I'm sure that any core duo will handle the task with ease.
The slowness of the drive will be significant if smart rendering avi clips - most commonly if you save a trimmed clip. It's not so significant when smart rendering mpegs. RAM helps speed up smart rendering, but even a base model will come with 512Mb.
You'll need a decent mouse - unless you are one of those rare types that gets on with laptop touchpads.
Your greatest concern might be for Mrs Marshalab! You burying your head in the laptop for extended periods might not fit in with her idea of the holiday!

Mind you, I do that also, and Mrs Daniel has no objection that I do quick edits while she takes her shower and select a dress to go dining.
But then having a shorter delay back home before she can show the DVD to envious female friends that don't even have an album or a scratchbook to show their pictures.
It's also easier to judge the clips on the PC screen than on the tiny LCD of the camera. Sometimes you have the opportunity to record additional footage the next day, if lighting was bad or you moved too much/tto fast.
I also like to have DVDRWs with rushes so my tape is not the only thing I have (what can happen on a journey, camera "eating" tape, drop cassette in water etc?)

This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.
