vs10 refuses to create iso image and keyboard is locked

Post by dadidu »

Hi folks -
1st pls dont say my PC is to weak:

CPU P4 3,4 GHz, prescott
512 MB Memory
I965 based motherboard
Harddisks - WD Raptor 36 GB, 2xCaviar Raid ed. 320 GB, all SATA
XP SP2, UVS10 (not plus) and UVS10 servicepack1
ATI X850, Catalyst 6.7

So now to my problem:
I have 16 files (huffyuv encoded, 52 GB), 48 kHz Audio raw
on all files I have edit the start and end time.

I add one or two files to the time axe - after 5 Min an DVD image is created.
I add 9 files and after 30 Min of time a DVD image was created
I add all 16 files and after 65 min (converting dvd title [001/001]) I get a failure when converting the disk. The most modest form is a dialog box from UVS10 'Fialure creating the disk', the most severe is a crash with the dialogue box 'do you wish to send an error report'.
Also sometimes the VS blocks my kbd - I cannot change the image name. I had this with an USB but also a PS/2 keyboard.

So what's wrong? The files are ok, no bad things with audio or subtitles, just noise reduced in Virtualdub, and encoded with the Huffyuv codec.

You'll be happy to know I have no intention of saying your computer is not up to the job!

However, the first thing you need to do is fill in the dots about what exactly you did when you said
"I add one or two files to the time axe - after 5 Min an DVD image is created.
I add 9 files and after 30 Min of time a DVD image was created".

VS doesn't do anything automatically if you just add files to the timeline. So what exactly did you do, and what properties did you set, to ensure that 'a DVD image was created'??? :?:

dvd image creating procedure

Post by dadidu »

Hi Ken! Thanks for the quick reply!

it's somehow difficult for me to explain because I have the german version of VS10

Here is that what I did

1.) I created a new project.
2.) I added some video files to the time line (see below)

Remarks on this step:
If I had chosen in step 2 one, two or 14 video clips the dvd image was created successful
If I use all of the 16 video clips I get the error after 65 minutes.
The same happens when trying to burn a dvd and not to create the image file

3.) I adjusted the start and finish time of each video clip
4.) click on the last slider ('Ausgeben' - maybe 'output' in the english version)
5.) click on 'create disk', I have chosen 4.7 GB DVD
6.) a window shows up with 'create chapters/titles' - everything is on default, I use the default layout and do not change anything
7.) click on next, again on next, the dvd burning window appears
The space calculation shows 2.8 GB of disk usage.

here I uncheck the 'output on dvd media', check 'create disk image', enter a file name
8.) click on 'burn' - 65 minutes of processing with 16 files - the lower progress bar reaches 100%, the upper progress bar 7%

I checked the last 2 video clips - they have the same encoding (Huffyuv), same audio bitrate (48 kHz), same video size (720x576) like the others and the preview playback in the clip view of the time line works fine. The files have in total 52 GB, all of my drives have sufficient space (much more than needed by VS). The file size of my clip files is between 3 and 6 gb, but this is also not of my concern, the hard drives are formatted with NTFS.

If I chose to create a file, e.g. a wmv or divx encoded file from the 16 clips I get no error so I assume that there's nothing wrong with the two last files. There's something wrong with the DVD creation process.

The very only fact I noticed that VS10 creates 2 GB files when capturing from a DV source (my D8 cam) with some index numbers in the file names like UVS131206-003.avi, but the processing time is the same - 60 Minutes for nearly one hour of video. This happened with an other project I created 3 months ago.
----------------------------------------
edit: I didn't have the servicepack 1 installed at that time.....
----------------------------------------

Because I wanted to do a strong noise reduction, and some other calculations to improve the video quality I merged all files together to a big one, did the noise reduction, and separated the scenes to these 16 files.

When processing I checked often the disk usage - no drive was running out of space.

Where are your temp files (VS10) located? On the System drive? Where is your swap file located and what are the sttings? 16 files at 52 GB file size, where did these come from and what are these, uncompressed AVI, mpeg2, what?

I think your system runs out of space for the swap and VS10 temp files. What is the file system on the system drive and your raid drives? You will need NTFS file system to be able to store larger files. That Vs cuts the mpeg files for the ISO image has to do with the DVD standard. Just look at any commercial DVD file structure and you will find that the VOB files are around 1 GB in size.

Quite apart from the possibility of your Radeon card being a problem, and quite apart from your incredible ranting rave in the preceding post, the obvious thing that sticks out in your description is that you haven't followed the sticky Recommended Procedure which you criticise in that same post.

Once you have finished your editing -- hopefully in those large DV/AVI files you also don't seem to like but which are really the best quality -- you DON'T jump straight to the burning module as you have. You first have to produce a single DVD compatible mpeg-2 file of your project: Share (Ausgeben) > Create Video File > DVD.

And then, yes, though you laugh at it in the other post, you then close your project and with an EMPTY timeline, you Ausgeben > Create Disc > DVD. Insert your new mpeg-2 file, create your menu and then either burn a disc or ask it to make a disc image ISO or DVD Folder Video_TS.

3 turns to the right

Post by dadidu »

3 turns to the right make also one turn to the left.

to Heinz-oz: I tried several catalyst versions, 6.5 and 6.7, and others.
selecting the right catalyst versions solves this preview-window problem and using a too new version has some problems with capturing from analogue sources (setting the capture pin on the rage theater)

Programs which behave like that are on the market in an unfinished state because it fails in doing simple tasks. Maybe it runs perfetly in Vista :-)

UVS products are designed to be simple. Even my brother with no special knowledge about encoing, dvd formats and so on was able to use it, and did the same with a dozen files from a cheap digicam.

There is no logic behind this procedure (the tutorial for UVS10 users you mentioned) but I give it a try. This is imo only avoiding bugs in the program, and finally I paid 50 Euro for a product that does not the job like the older 15 Euro version.

If I do a prior mpeg2 encoding as mentioned in one of the t two things will happen:

1.) a kind of bandwith usage file is created
2.) in the ulead temp (c:\documents and settings\username\application data....\10.0\) will remain temporary mpeg files which are maybe reused when encoding the same stuff again to a DVD so the first encoding pass can be omitted and the second will run very fast.

If I have these Mpeg files noone will be larger than 2 GB, and the DVD standard seems to have an 1 GB limit per vob file.

There's no logic in the fact that 46 GB can be encoded straight into a DVD and 52 GB not. It looks like a builtin limit that wasn't removed in the final version. I hope that I have some more memory available this evening, and I guess that 1 GB of memory will solve my problem or creating smaller AVI files.

Hi

It is a fact that some users have problems when rendering in the burner module.

I would recommend creating an Mpeg file (Share-Create Video file) prior to the burner module.

Then Share Create Disc-Add Video files.

The overall process takes the same time.
The files created use the same memory.
You can play the files to check quality prior to burning.

Using compatible Mpeg files in the burn module should not re-render, the burning process is much quicker. Just rendering to create the menu then burn.

If you do render in the burner module the temp files afaik should be deleted on completion. If you have files remaining then they are left over after a crash/fail to burn????????(I may be corrected on that)

Video Studio uses two working folders,
One for the capture and edit processes, and one for the burner section.
You can re-allocate the burner working folder by selecting the lower left icon and selecting preferences. (users with a small C: drive may have problems)

I started using Video Studio before the software allowed rendering in the burner module. You had to create a video file first. Maybe I am just old and don¡¦t like change. But it works, and that¡¦s why I recommended it.

Trevor

PS
When, after seven and a half million years of calculation, the answer finally turns out to be 42, Deep Thought's creators sheepishly realize that they do not know the question.

hi dadidu, there doesn't seem to be any logic in keeping trying to help you. You already know it all and better than long time users

If you don't want help and are intend on not following the advice given by long time users, why do you keep coming back?

Do you want to convince us all that VS 10+ is a load of crap? Well, I'm sure you will find a few recalcitrants like yourself on this forum who will agree with you. I for one don't. I also don't think that the "Recommended procedure" is a must for everyone. I for one chose to ignore it and I also burn straight from the time line without creating an intermediate video file to be loaded into a new project. That being said, I also do know, that this very same procedure got many a frustrated user going. If you do have a problem, follow that procedure, logical or not. Don't bag something you haven't even tried.

the crash mentioned by me was caused by a lack of physical memory. I upgraded my memory to 2 GB, and now VS10 crashes later. And I won't do things like first creating one mpeg file, then adding it to an empty timeline.... the entire DVD creation process is instable (if I use it in the same way like in VS8)and SP1 for VS10 does not solve this problem.

without servicepack 1 I get the error [125:0:0] Fehler beim Erstellen der Disc - error in creating the disc after 90 minutes of processing time

After upgrading with SP1 it crashes after 90 minutes instead producing an error message. The DVD creation process is BUGGY! Maybe Ulead needs a software test engeneer? Here I am - give me 60.000 bucks a year and I will take the responsibility of quality management.

But actually I will buy another Videostudio 8.0 and that will wipe away all of my problems. I remember: version 9 has also DVD exporting problems due to a new programming strategy or so and that was the reason why I had chosen the 8 and not 9 in the past.

Not on my machine it isn't. I don't create a video file first like others do recommend. I don't have a problem at all.

The last VS I used was VS5, freebee with my IEEE1394 PCI card. I decided very quickly that I wanted more and went for MediaStudioPro. Only now with the advancements of VS 10+ did I get interested again. I wish you luck with the older version.

And guess what, historically, was the version which caused most members of this Board the most problems: VS8 -- which of course dadidu apparently finds the most stable!!!!! Horses for courses, anyone??
