I bought a new IEEE card that came with VS8 SE software. I used the VS software before, once, and finally was able to capture some video, although it took me a while to get everything synced. NOW, I am trying to capture more video but I cannot get the video to play in the video box. I AM able to operate my camcorder (Canon ZR-1998-mini-DV) using the onscreen keys (stop, play, etc), but no audio or video plays on screen, only on the playback screen of my Canon.
I have tried to manually find a section of video I want to capture, and hit the capture video button, however, when I stop the capture, an error appears that the video is corrupt and will be deleted.
I am using Windows XP home edition on a Dell desktop. I would like to save the video to MPEG format, but when I select any other format, besides DV, it automatically switches back to DV. Please help if you can!!! I am beyond frustrated!
BTW, I did a search and did not find anything detailing my situation....
Help! No video/audio onscreen-VS8....

First, if you are capturing from a mini-DV camera, you SHOULD be capturing to DV format. That will guarantee best quality.
You should, however, be able to capture direct to mpeg-2 if your Dell has enough resources to do so. But be warned: it is an incredibly resource-intensive process, and many people find that their computer is not up to it.
You need to ensure also that the capture plug-in is set to 'Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug-in'. You can check this in VS8 in the Tools menu up in the top right of screen. (Frankly, I don't know if this is available or not in the SE version, but have never heard of it not being available.)
Finally, you might also want to check under File > Preferences > General, that your Instant Playback Target (second from bottom) is set to Preview Window (i.e. the VS monitor window). By default, it sets to 'Dual Head Device' which is external.

OK, it happened to me again! I was using the Canon ZR to put some home movies onto my computer, and then to youtube. That was happening on Sunday. Today, I try to do the same, and the preview window will NOT SHOW MY VIDEO!! ARRRGGGHHHH!!! I AM able to control the camcorder with the onscreen keys, but no video appears!!! I was saving to MPEG-2 format, and I've tried switching to DV AVI etc to no avail!! Anyone please help! Thanks!!

That has happened to me from time to time, but it's usually a result of my camera automatically shutting down because I stopped to edit, answer the phone, etc. Turning the camera off and back on again solves it.
