Severe problems with Video Studio 9

Post by Clemens Buijs »

I really need your advice.

I use Video Studio 9 for almost one year now. I record TV series and edit them with VS9.

Since a couple of days VS-9 behaves very unstable:
- when switching to multi-trim mode the application often 'hangs' when I scroll the time bar (with left/right arrows or by dragging the little arrow); only way out is CTRL_ALT_DEL;
- when creating the movie, almost every time the rendering is going very well but hangs (so it seems) on a trimmed part of the movie; again CTRL_ALT_DEL;
- in many situations, when the rendering progress finally comes to 99% the applications hangs; CTRL_ALT_DEL but the new movie seems to be ok.

I run Windows XP Home with 2Gb memory and enough disk space, Pentium 4 processor laptop. I installed the latest VS-9 patch from your web site (the 5-in-1 patch) but without succes.

The recorded movies are in VCD mode and a use the option "use project settings".

Beside the regular Windows updates I only installed the latest December 2006 DirectX package from Microsoft.

Would be great if you could help me out of this or give me any useful tips.

Thanks in advance,
Clemens Buijs.

Clemens,
I would do a System Restore (Control Panel / System) to a date before the problem started. If this is only a few days, you may be able to identify which installed program was the cause.

General house keeping like deleting temp files and unnecessary data and programs and running a defrag might also help.

Dear John and Heinz,

First of all thanks a lot for the quick responses you gave me; really great.

I did a restore using a restoration point of three weeks ago. The problem is still there. My system is also 'clean' (no temp files and all drives defragg'd).

Would it be useful to complety remove Directx from my laptop?

Would it be useful to re-install Video Studio-9?

Thanks again.

Reinstallation is probably your next best step. Be sure to completely uninstall Video Studio and all traces of directories with "Ulead" in the name to force the install program to do a complete job. It would not hurt to uninstall DirectX because the install will put it back.

Good Luck

You've got a bad video file. VideoReDo and Womble have tools that can fix some MPEG file problems. You can get free trial versions of both programs.
The recorded movies are in VCD mode...
The more compresed formats seem to be more prone to problems.

If your capture hardware will capture to DV (AVI/DV = 13GB per hour), it would be better to capture and edit in DV format, and then convert to VCD as a last step before burning (in the future).

It may help to convert this file to AVI/DV (Go the Share window and Save As AVI/DV.) Then trim & edit. Then make your VCD from that file. (Video Studio will convert it back to the correct MPEG format.)

Sometimes, MPEGs (VCD & DVD) can actually get corrupted during editing. If you are able to make a good un-edited VCD / DVD from this file, then you may need to use a special purpose MPEG editor (VideoReDo or Womble) for the editing step. (You can still use Video Studio to make the VCD/DVD.)

Unstable VS 9

Hi,
Did you use "disc clean" up via my computer-r click on drive-
properties. That often finds temp files that would not otherwise be
found.
Re reinstall have a look at the following:-
RE INSTALL VS9
Re-Installation of Video Studio 9
Copy of a reply from ULEAD received by forum member chinito
Before commencing this procedure please ensure you do not have any video/clips in the folders to be deleted. If so please move them to another location.

Proceed to step 2, even if you can't complete step 1.

2) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden files and folders." in folder option in OS)

3) Please del the folder " Ulead VideoStudio 9.0" folder in C:\program files\ulead system

Dear Friends,

I tried all your tips the last two days:
- recover from a point in the past
- re-install Video Studio 9 after have cleaned up my PC (incl. register)
The problem persisted.

What I have done now: install VS-9 on the same computer as where I record the TV movies. Editing seems to be ok now.

On the previous PC I have another version of Directx and .Net Framework; could that explain the problems? Thanks for your help.
Enjoy your holidays.

IO don't think .Net Framework would affect it. However, if it doesn't have DirectX 9 (and preferably 9c) that could be your problem...
