Please help: Ulead cannot find my Camcorder!
I am a frustrated Brit seeking help. I have previously made movies on Ulead 9 no problem, but I now have a new PC and the PC can only find my web cam as a source. I have loads of DVDs with recorded material ont he camcorder including my wedding but the damn PC cannot locate it no matter how hard I try. The software that came witht he camcorder, that is not as good as Ulead, has no problem whatsoever finding the camcorder, but I am having a nightmare with Ulead. Can anyone help me please?

Make sure you are using Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2, some camcorders will have issues if you do not use Win2K SP4 or WinXP SP2.

Thanks for the advice guys. Am going to try to update my profile now. I basically made the computer myself with some bits and bobs that I bought on the internet. I think I gave it a fairly good specification but am beginning to wish I had bought it off the peg. I am using Windows XP Prof version 2002, service pack 2. The camcorder is a Sony DVD Handycam Mega Pixel Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar and is reasonably up to date, about 2 years old but was state of the art when bought. It is connected via USB. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

You'll need to tell us exactly what steps you are taking to import the video from your camera's mini-DVD disc. IIRC, with Sonys, you often have to "finish" the disc before it can be recognised by a computer -- and a lot of Sonys are also criticised by their owners for the time this usually takes. That is done through the camera, not the computer, anyway, so you would need to consult your camera manual on that.
Next, I hope you are not trying to 'capture' in the normal sense. Instead of even opening the Capture tab on Video Studio, you simply open the Edit tab and right click in either the Library pane or the timeline and choose Insert DVD/DVD-VR. The follow the prompts, remembering the actually check the boxes besides those parts of the directory tree of your mini DVD which appears which you want to import.
If that does not work, some people find that copying the contents of their mini-DVD to the computer, and importing from that folder, works.
Finally, if all else fails, some people find that if they can copy their mini DVD to the computer using Windows, then simply changing the extension on the resulting files from VOB to MPG works.

Still struggling to locate Camcorder
Thanks to Vidoman, Htchien and Ken for their responses, unfortunately I am still struggling. The problem seems to be that when I am in Ulead it simply cannot find the Camcorder. I have tried putting the disks into the DVD drive, I have tried copying them onto the computer but it cannot read them. If I play it in media player, there are no audio files copied across. Previously I know Ulead found my camcorder without a problem.
I have tried the repair function within Ulead.
I have now updated my profile although cannot seem to find out what my mother board is.
Thanks for any advice.
Jon - P.S. Ken all the best in the Ashes not that you need any luck, it pains me to say it looks like they are returning Down Under.

Hi Johnny, Ulead cannot and will not detect your DVD handycam.
Now say a silent thank-you to Sony!
The way they have designed them is that Windows detects the cam as a "Mass Storage device" via the USB connection and the ONLY thing that will detect it as a cam is the software that came with the cam.
To import the mpegs using Ulead you will have to finalise the disc then place it in the DVD tray of your computer and import from there.

This is a common issue with USB camcorders. If the cam you use has a DV iLink or Firewire port, use the port to capture your DV video, not the USB one.lancecarr wrote:The way they have designed them is that Windows detects the cam as a "Mass Storage device" via the USB connection and the ONLY thing that will detect it as a cam is the software that came with the cam.
To use the DV cam with the iLink / Firewire connection, you need a Firewire IEEE-1394 port in your system.

None of the Sony DVD cams have firewire connections.
What is annoying with them is that they have done something proprietary with the set up so that the only software that can access the cam is the software they provide.
It was that problem that led me to Ulead in the first place.
Most users either use the included software to transfer the MPEGs then use their editor of choice or finalise the disc in the cam, put the disc in the DVD tray and import from their.
