File format AVCHD

Post by adgelhar »

There have been several requests about Sony's new camcorders relating to Uleads support of the new AVCHD (MPG4) format but you are ignoring the questions.

I am considering purchasing the Sony HDR-SR1 camcorder but there is no editing software for the AVCHD coding.

I currently use MovieFactory5+ and VideoStudio 10+.

Can you give me an expected timeline for supporting the AVCHD format?

Reviews of the camera indicate it is in your plans - but when?

I hear they are working on it though.

If your considering buying one of those cams I would first make a small demo in the store with a dvd on one of the cams, finalize it. Then bring it home and see how well your computer handles playing the new highly compressed High_Defintion_Video format. You will need a fast computer to play them not to mention attempting to edit in that format.

The AVCHD video format is nice because the smaller file sizes are manageable. Editing them sounds to me like the file compression
will be a nightmare.

Thanks,

The problem is that this is a hard disk camera no external media like tape or disks. I'm just after whether or not Ulead is going to support AVCHD (or not) and when.

Hello,

The reviews of the Sony HDR-SR1 are great. I wish they used firewire instead of USB2.

I am assuming the camera has a pass through (in video mode) so what the camera sees (even without recording) can be sent to video capture and put on the computer. My question would be what format would that be - if the camera uses AVCHD. I like to edit AVI files because that is more complete as far as the frames are concerned - this is where the drawback is editing in the AVCHD format where there is no software to do it.

I have the horsepower to process the files as well as Large disk capacity including a 400Mb external drive connected by firewire.

One thing I am doing is converting home movies 8mm/super8 mm films through a ADVC110 analog/digital converter connected with firewire to the computer.

Hi,

Ulead will support AVC HD in its next generation products. About the time frame, I cannot say when but I can say it will not take long.

Thanks,

I figured it was just a matter of a little pressure from the consumer base (and Sony and Panasonic).

Spending $1300 or so on a product when you don't know if you will be able to edit the formats is a little disconcerting.

If you want to edit your material then this is wise thinking. Maybe Sony should be offering editing support before expecting 3rd party software to handle it. Lucky for them people buy the latest greatest gadgets just to enjoy new technological advancements... or to be ready for the future. Some of them will never edit anyway. Others may realize the current limitations too late.

Looking back. Remember when DV came out, the MS DV codec was still broken, systems with less than 450MHz had trouble with OHCI unless they were well tuned or using proprietary DV streaming hardware, and they sold nEUtered camcorders in Europe that lacked DV-input so you couldn't even record your project back to tape without hacking the firmware.

Thanks,

The price you pay for living on the edge with technology.

This is still better (obviously) then the 8mm film I am converting from old 8mm cameras that you have to play back on a 8/super8 projector. I am converting home movies to DVD.
