- First one is that on playbacks, I cannot start from a certain position of a video clip without it starting from the very beggining! Is this normal?
Another problem I have is that when I cut a clip in VS editor and I play it back, it will A.) Play the original clip even the cut-off peice of the clip has been deleted; B.) The timeline does not move while this is happening, and then starts moving when it gets to the starting point of my new clip. Is this normal with VS10? Is ithis a glitch with the trial? What's going on?
The playback on projects with multiple overlay tracks is frame-by-frame slow, even on a brand new Windows! Is this normal? When published, will it play back the same way?
I'm having a few problems with the the trial version

OK, so I have a free trial going of VS10 and have a few questions, if you'd all be so grateful to answer them for me!

Not knowing exactly what you are doing and how, I would say the behaviour is probably normal. Before you can watch a video from the time line, depending on your settings, the program has to create a preview temp file. If you want to look at what you did to your video with edits, transitions, filters etc., the program has to render a preview file again. If you cut a clip on the time line and delete a portion, these actions will be recorded in the vsp (project) file but the original source clip is not altered. The cut portions will be deleted when you crate a new video file from the time line.
If you want to preview multiple time lines with overlays, these need to be rendered first also. Depending on the power of your system, this can take time. It depends on the power of the system, not it's age. Once the rendering process is finished, it will play normally.

It should playback from your cursor/playhead position. I just tried it and used the various ways to start play. In Cip Mode, Project Mode, Storyboard and Timeline View. You can press the spacebar to start/pause play, or press the Play button.
When you cut a clip, look at the trim handles. The left or right trim handle, depending on if you cut the beginning or end of a clip, is moved. In the timeline when you cut a clip, you are basically just setting the Mark-In or Mark-Out point for the clip. After cutting, you can drag the Jog Slider (arrow under the preview window) passed the Mark-In/Out point and see the part of the clip that you cut out, IF you are in Clip Mode. In Project mode that's not possible. Once you cut and deleted VS should stop play at the Mark-Out point or Start play at the Mark-In point.
As far as quality of the Playback Preview, it is not going to be like your video when you render (publish) it. VS is throwing everything that you have done, together "on the fly". Massive task for a computer to do. This has been addressed a multitude of times on the forum.

will take you to a short tutorial showing you how to find and complete this information. That way it will always be available and you will not have to retype it in the future.

Like Heinz, not knowing exactly what you are doing or anything about your computer or the properties of the files in question, it is difficult to come up with an answer. There is also the question -- which Heinz has alluded to -- of whether you are simply wanting to play back just a clip (in which case you use 'Clip' mode which is fairly instantaneous) or you want to see/hear everything (transitions, added titles and audio) -- in which case you play it back in Project mode. Depending on your computer resources, this can take a while to start. (The Clip and Project modes can be selected by choosing either of those words which appear to the immediate left of the Play button on the preview screen. Blue is the active colour.)
However, one thing you may want to try is to put your mouse cursor in the timescale ruler which appears immediately above the timeline (not the storyboard). Put the mouse cursor over the spot where you want the preview to start and left-click it once. A video studio cursor (downward pointing arrow head) should appear at that point in the timescale ruler, and if you click the play button under the preview monitor, your preview should start at your selected point. Depending on how far your selected point is within the video (and also depending on your computer resources), it might take a few seconds before it actually starts playing.

OK, thanks for your answers. I have tried the steps you have given me as for the playback timeline issue in the trial. It is still doing the same problem. I have clicked on the timeline and everything that you've said but it still happens as I mentioned in the beginning:

About the playback and publishing:
So are you saying that what you see in your preview screen is what you get on the DVD?
Thanks again for your help.
I'm not sure what to do as you guys say this does not happen on your VS10. Maybe this is a trial issue?abcdefilm wrote:Another problem I have is that when I cut a clip in VS editor and I play it back, it will A.) I have had VS10 at times get jumpy on a timeline during playback. The solution I have come up with that seems to work is save the project. Close the program (sometimes reboot), reopen VS10 and load the project. This seems to clear things up for my system.abcdefilm wrote:Anybody?abcdefilm wrote:OK, thanks for your answers. As for the quality in the little window, yes when you burn the disc or make the video file the quality will be much better. The littl window is just a preivew.

NO.... What you get on the DVD will be much better. The Preview Screen is as the name implies a preview. It is put together very quickly to give you an idea of what the finished item will look like. When you actually render (fancy term for create) your video it will take quite some time.abcdefilm wrote:.......

If you have a 1 hour video don't be surprised it it takes 2- 4 hours to 'render.'
