VS9 chopping minutes off my project

Post by lifted_one »

I am pulling my hair out over this problem. I have 3 seperate projects which have a MPG2(UFF) clips in them. Everytime I burn a DVD from one of these projects, VS9 will only burn roughly 90% of the timeline to the final DVD. I check and recheck to make sure that everything is setup correctly but still I can't seem to burn a full project to a DVD.
Am I overlooking something? Or is my VS9 just screwed up? I have tried making new projects and starting from scratch but still the same thing happens. Also I have tried on three different PCS with starting a project from scratch and still I get chopped. Could there be something wierd with my MPG2 files?

While there are a variety of other questions which may have to be asked, the main one from my point of view is whether you are indeed -- as you imply -- burning to DVD from the project (i.e. with your project in the timeline, you go to Share > Create Disc > DVD)?

While this may work, our recommended procedure is first to go to Share > Create Video File > DVD. This will produce a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file. If you produce one of these, you can first check to make sure the whole project has been included in this file. And if it is all there, you can then go to Share > Create Disc > DVD.

A couple of possibilities come to mind...

Do you get a playable DVD with a chopped-off program, or a DVD that never get's completed?

I once had a similar problem with DVD Workshop -

It may be "remembering" an incorrect file length.

I added a video file to the project.

Then, I went back and edited that file, making it longer.

When I burned the DVD, it chopped-off the length... it seemed to "remember" the old shorter length.

I solved that problem by re-naming the file and adding the newly-named file to the project. (Which means I had to start-over with chapter-points, etc.)

Another possibility is a bad MPEG. I've had a few weird problems caused by corrupt MPEGs (mostly crashing or DVDs with 'lip-sync" problems).

And, you can't always tell by playing the file... My bad MPEGs played-back fine. In my case, they were getting corrupted simply by editing them (the un-edited files were OK).

Once I discovered that my MPEGs were getting corrutped during editing, I bought a special-purpose MPEG editor from Womble.

If you have a corrupt MPEG, if may be corrupt for a different reason.... :?

I've seen that happen when copying a VOB file from a DVD folder, and changing its extension from VOB to MPG.

How were your mpeg files created, or where did they come from? What are their properties?

Also, make sure you don't have the Preview Range set. You will know you do if you have a red line above your timeline. Burning with that set will only burn what you have set as the preview.

Yes. you are all sort of right. What I did:
1. Burned DVD+RW from my Panasonic DVR's hard drive.
2. Took the DVD+RW onto my PC and and converted the DVD to an MPG2 using this method http://www.zatznotfunny.com/dvdshrink.htm

I think my MPG2s are corrupt ... because when I "share" my project to MPG2 file ... then in some spots it starts to stutter and stall out.

So ... whats the best way to fix my screwed up MPG2s?

Place a corrupted file onto the VideoStudio timeline and
Share | Create Video.
Turn OFF smart render and create a new MPEG2 file.
Repeat for each corrupted video.

If this fails to work then you may need to use either
Womble MPEG Editor
or
Video ReDo

Instead of following the procedure you used (which was what I feared that you simply renamed *.vob to *.mpg), have you tried the Import from DVD function of VideoStudio :?: This function should properly import the mpeg from your DVD+RW disc (or you could copy the folder to your hard drive, and then import from the hard drive).

I see now I was duped by that procedure using DVDshrink and renaming to MPG. They did not say anything about messing up the MPG files.

The renamed MPGs (from VOB) do however play correctly in WinDVD7 ... its just that they are un-useable in VS9. :(
