No combination of intermediate filters could be found??

I am trying to open a short .avi clip in my .mpg project. I have had it working fine over the last 2 days, until about 5 minutes ago, and now it won't open the file.

This is the error:

Unable to play the file.
No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection.

It still opens fine when the project settings are AVI. Why has it stopped opening in my MPEG project when it was working fine a few minutes ago? I have tried rebooting.

Ok, now I have tried reformatting my HDD and reinstalling my OS and apps. Still doesn't work. At least I am able to convert it to MPG and reinsert it into my timeline. Why has this happened? Who knows, the answer probably lies with whoever makes those crop circles.
