Dolby Digital 5.1 output file is not a panning sound mix

Post by luc »

I use MSP 8.10, SP1
Project settings : Mpeg DVD PAL 5.1

I tried to have different sounds coming from the different speakers at different time (FL, FR, RR, RL)
one track per speaker, using audio mix panel.
Everthing is correct when I preview in the audio mix panel (I check the different levels in the VU meter : each speaker is used alternatively).

When I create an Mpeg DVD PAL 5.1 file and play the file in a DVD player (PowerDVD or Nero Showtime) all the speakers seems to play the same sound : the sound does not jump from one speaker to the other.

Any ideas ?

Thanks !

Do your players support 5.1? I have had no problems with WMP.

Yes my player is 5.1.
The file is really a 5.1 dolby digital file, but the panning effect is just gone when after rendering the file...

THanks

A player with 5.1 sound is not good enough... There is a difference between 5.1 surround sound and AC3 which is what MSP is Supposed be encoding in. You need a player with a REAL AC3 decoder.

Try burning the file to disk and playing it back in your stand alone dvd player... that will tell you if there is a problem with the file or not, since stand alone's have AC3 support.

I think this is because the panning effect that I set in the audio mix panel cannot be saved (apply button is inactive).

Anybody know how to solve this ?
fyi the test project I created, if you open it you will see that no panning effects has been applied. Are you able to apply some panning effects and save them ?

Yes, but it is many months since I did this and I've forgotten how I did it. Did you click the "pencil" icon on each channel before making your adjustments? If you do this, the check mark comes up solid.

Hi!

I had the same problem an came to the same fix. Im not really sure, what option to choos for automatic write (standard or overwrite) but it works now.

BUT ist there a possibility to save the settings auf the audio mixer for each project? When i close the programm and start again or even load another project the settings are lost!
