Videostudio 10 capture window only in 16:9

Post by alxx »

I just installed 10. Was using 9. My first time in a forum.

When I capture (from VCR), I only get 16.9 in the capture window. This did not happen in 9 and I can't find a setting or any nfo to change it to fill the capture window area.

This is very annoying and almost enough to push me back to 9 and return 10.

Can't I view what I am capturing in other than 16:9?

Ok, an update. I read in another post about changing the "Video preview pin" and that works, except like the other post(er), it reverts back to 16.9 whenever I leave the capture function.

My question now is obvious... how to save that setting.....????

Hi

and welcome to the forum.

Read my quick guide to ¡¥16:9 a look at Widescreen¡¦. From the link below

This shows how a 16:9 and 4:3 should look in VS

Video Studio changes the project properties to match the first video clip placed in the timeline.
To see this in action Tick¡XFile-Preferences¡XShow Messages when inserting first video¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K
Start a new project and insert your video clip¡Xselect details from the pop up window to view do they indicate 16:9¡Xselect Yes

If this video is 16:9 then the project properties should change to match.

Hope this helps

When you open VS10, the start-up screen (where you choose Video Editor etc) has down in the bottom left a box for 16:9. It seems as though you might have checked this, so 16:9 is set as you default. Next time you open VS, uncheck that box.

And if by accident you have turned off the start-up screen, then you can reactivate it in File > Preferences > General > Show Start-up Screen.

First, since this is my first post on a forum, I am not sure how to reply to your appreciated comments. Hope this works....

Anyway, I may not have made clear what the problem I am having is...or maybe I am not reading your post correctly..

It is not that my captured vids are coming out in 16.9. I have been using versions of Videostudio since I discovered it..

The problem is that I cannot find a way to keep the video capture window in 4:3 (filling the window). I can only the see the vid being captured in 16:9.

As posted, I can get it in 4:3 by changing the "Video Preview Pin" but as soon as I leave (and sometimes it will change on its own before leaving) the capture function, it will revert back to 16:9.

How can I make the Video Preview Pin setting permanent...?

Thanks again for the replies recieved and future replies......

If you leave the little 16:9 box in the photo Steve has provided, unchecked, then 4:3 is supposed to be the permanent default for capture etc. In my case, it certainly works that way.

Thanks Ken.... and everyone else out there...but ...

I must not be clear on this... your saying that if left unchecked (which is the way mine has always been) that ( and this is important ) I will VIEW the incoming video as 4:3.

I have been using VS9 since it came out and have never had any problem like this with it....

I thought that the setting that you referred to above will affect the finished/captured video....

As I stated above, I can get what I want by changing the Video Preview Pin setting in the Capture Options...

Again, the captured vid is not 16:9. That is not a problem....

I am starting to feel really dumb ... am I not stating this clearly or am I not getting something....

I do not want to see the vid that I am capturing in letterbox / 16:9 in the preview window....

NOTE: I am capturing from VHS or Hi8

Since I am complaining, I also don't understand why Ulead does'nt save the user settings from project to project. Every time I start some project or leave a function (capturing), or get out of the app and back in, then I have to reset all the settings that I previously entered. Especially the Project settings... why is this ?.. do they not use an INI file or what....

I suspect that the lack of settings saving is why the Video Preview Pin keeps reverting back and won't hold onto my changes...

Which brings us back to the problem... .. how to save that Video Preview Pin setting.....????

Sorry for my ranting and duplicate statements but this is getting frustrating.

Video Preview Pin

Post by rjgeisler »

Hi Alxx,

I am the person that posted the Video Preview Pin workaround. The problem is VS is forcing the wrong mode UYVY. All other setting are correct (YUY2) except the preview pin.

You must be using an ATI AIW X800 or newer.

If you notice, the screen is a squezzed widescreen and clipped top and bottom. So, this is not really a 16:9 format. This has absolutely nothing to do with the setting at startup.

If you just ignore the preview screen, it does capture correctly.

I have not had a response from Ulead about this and I have not found a parameter to set in a .ini file that controls this.

I am still not sure if this is a problem with Ulead or with the Video Capture Drivers.

P.S. The preview screen should switch to the correct size as soon as Capture begins, at least mine does!

Hi

Start a new project.
Change the background colour to red File-Preferences-background color
Does red fill the preview window? or do you see a big black bar top and bottom?

With nothing in the timeline, check the project properties.
File-Project Properties¡Xin the pop up window¡Xlower info box¡XWhat does the aspect indicate 16:9 or 4:3. (do not edit or change anything.)

If the splash screen has been checked for 16:9 then expect to see 16:9, otherwise you should see 4:3.

Start a new project-File- New Project

Now insert one of your captured video files into the timeline.

If the file is compatible then the project properties will change to match the video properties.
This happens with the first clip placed in the timeline.

Does the preview screen change.

Now right click the video clip in the timeline and select properties.
What do the video ¡¥Attributes¡¦ indicate.

Thanks Trevor....

First, I am using an ATI All-In-Wonder Pro x600 video card. I can't find anything in it's settings that might solve the problem though, and it does work fine with VS9.

Your first post today is relevant... and yes, I did get the temp Video Preview Pin fix from one of your posts.

You state that as soon as your capture begins your preview area switches to 4:3. Mine does not... the only way to get 4:3 is to change the YUY2 setting as your post states.... by the way the screen size itself is not a problem, just the video being captured showing within it.

As to the your second post today... everything else concerning a capture works fine... and yes (as above) it does actually capture at the proper size... and as far as the attributes of the project settings and the properties of the video, everything indicates 4:3 as it should...

I guess I am going to have to live with having to reset the Video Preview Pin everytime I want to capture... or go back to version 9 (which was actually fine) until Ulead comes up with a fix for this problem... I just hate not being able to solve little problems like this...

Again, thank you for your help. If you (or anyone else) discover a fix for this be sure to post it or leave me a message. If I find an answer, I will be sure to do the same....

Hi

Just a little confused with the reference to YUY2, it was rjgeisler that commented on.

When you capture, I assume you are using Avi.

Select 720 x 576 as the frame size.

Use Software compression
Advanced
In the compression box choose Microsoft Video 1

This will capture to similar properties as Dv-Avi at 13 Gb per hour.

Otherwise have you tried Mpeg capture
Select DVD as the capture format.

Please right click on a clip in the timeline select properties, what are they?

Sorry rjgeisler,

I got lazy and did'nt look to see who was helping me.... assumed it was Trevor..

Anyway, your post have been the most help.. Thank you.. and everyone..

You seem to "get it", my problem that is (albiet a small, fairly insignificant one) .... to which I still have no solution. Well, not a permanent one.

And to Trevor, no I am capturing strait to mpeg2.. I don't edit what I am capturing very much so don't feel a need to go to AVI for my current project... and again... everything other than the Video Preview Pin shows as 4:3. Didn't get back to you right away as I was gone for a few days....

I see that this post has been looked at over a hundred times... so I guess that I am not alone with this... I am still scouring the net for an answer and won't stop at this forum. I have a problem.. can't just let these things go.. there IS an answer to it... and by all that is logical I will find it.

Thanks again ... keep those replys coming...............

alxx,

Hi! I have been looking and looking and nothing yet.

I am curious, what Version of the Catalyst Drivers are you using with your X600?

You may want to review my post about this subject:

From the ATI Propeties page accessed via Display Properties/Settings/Advanced

Driver date: 11/03/2004
Driver version: 6.14.10.6490
Chip Type: Radeon X600 Pro

I think that the current version is 6.9 for Catalyst. So there is a possiblity it is related to this particular problem...but I kinda don't think so. I'm thinking it is on the Ulead side. For my problem, I am blaming them. I have never liked having to reset my "Project Properties" every time I start one. Or the "Video Color Manager" in Capture / Options.

I'll only update the driver itself and not Catalyst. Probably neither. I have been leary as I had been reading in the ATI forums about problems people were having. Not just with Ulead, just in general. There is a lot to say about ATI driver updates.. but as this is a Ulead forum.. I won't.

I am always very cautious about updating any drivers though. It has to be really worth it to me.

No, I never had any problems with the ATI / Ulead combo at all until going to VS10. Maybe I got lucky. The problem with the Video Pin Preview is annoying but minor and the only problem I have had so far... well, except the complaints above, which VS9 had also. I've gotten so used to reseting everything, everytime I start a project, what's one more thing. What is even more annoying is knowing how easily Ulead could fix all these "saving settings" problems.

I did read your post that you left a link for. I feel for you man. What a hassle. I've been there but with other cards, drivers, drives, etc....

I'll wait awhile and see if Ulead fixes it in an update. I have done SP1 already. I just thought that since I liked VS9 (for the most part) I should upgrade to VS10. High-def is coming....

But again, thanks, and as stated, I will keep this active until there is some kind of resolution or I switch to Premiere.
