Transfer VidStud 9 project to different drive

Post by btfjf1 »

Hello. A Newbie here. I have recently completed a vacation vid...My final task is to add music..My "C"drive is almost completely full...The playback (in the editing window) is starting to stutter..I've had this kind of trouble before and usually get a warning that says "system memory low".
I would like to know how to transfer this project from the "C" drive to the "D" drive and whether I should transfer the whole Ulead program with it...Uninstall (from "C") and re-install (in "D") the ulead program? It should be noted that I have a standalone HP Lightscribe burner (which my computer lists as "F")- I don't know if this "F" is a drive or just a burner, though.
My "C" is 90%+ filled..My "D" drive 90%+ empty.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi

You do not need to re-install the program, it is ok where it is.

The biggest files used in the project will be the video files. Mpeg or Avi.

Moved them from the 'c' drive to the ¡¥D¡¦ drive

Now when you open the project you will be asked to re-link.
Look at the file name in the window, browse the drive for the files on the D drive.

Do the same with any other files you wish to move, although the video files will be the main culprit.

Note:- with a clip in the timeline or library, right click and select properties, here you can see where the files are saved on the hard drive.

Hi Trevor.
3 things.
1.Thank you very much for the quick reply..This will definetly put my mind at ease about transferring the project. 2. Again, thanks for the link to your manuals..I'm printing them for future reference (which will be often!) 3. I'm going to follow your instructions tonight..I'll let you know how it goes.

Hello. An update.
Spent a great part of this past weekend plowing through this project. I had a small problem with the audio-I kept bringing songs into the project from a disk, but through "record to timeline" as opposed to "import from the audio CD" function..The music kept disappearing ("unable to re-link") until it dawned on me why-Must import !I finished the editing, adding menu's, etc and tried to burn. It ran for approximately 5 minutes and stopped ("Target file not large enough"-"We" will clear cache files", etc). Went back to project and another song was not "re-link"able. Took that song out totally, re-did menu's etc, and then had it burn to a different folder on the "D" drive...The computer ran for 7.5 hours and when I got up this morning, a pop up box said "do you want to re-try or re-boot"-details on the screen "7 mb needed, o available"-Went into "disk defragmenter to determine who space was left-93% free on "D"; 7% on "C"(Note; the new folder was directed to "D"). I clicked on re-try, nothing happened. So I shut it down and will re-try tonight. I have NERO installed. I have been reading about how it is the best DVD burner out there. I tried to import this .VSP project to that burner, but it said that my project file was empty-it showed it as containing 0 MB's. So now I need to figure out to get my ULEAD project into the NERO burning ROM program...Any help appreciated.

Hi btfjf

Your problem is your workflow and your understanding of a VSP.
A vsp is a video studio project, This file can only be used in Video Studio. and contains all the edited information within the timelines.

The clips within the timelines are not the actual video files but virtual clips.
All other additional clips Images / Audio / Titles etc are the same, virtual clips.
All clips in the timelines are linked to the vsp. Moving your Audio files will loose the link and you will be prompted to re-link. You are best to copy the audio CD to your hard drive(I use real player) then import from your hard drive.

When you have finished editing, I would recommend creating a new video file of the project. (share-create video file) (using the pal or ntsc-dvd option)This creates a Mpeg suitable for burning, this file can be used in nero.

The new file (mpeg) is used to burn your disc (share-Create Disc-Add video)

Ok read the recommended procedure from the top of this forum

Read My quick Guides

Hope this helps

And check where BOTH your working folders are located. The first is obvious in File > Preferences > General > Working Folder.

But there is a second one hidden away in the burning module, in the first of the three little icons in the bottom left of the burning screen (Preferences).

By default, both are located in the same folder on the C:\ drive, but changing one does not change the other. So if you have changed your working folder for editing in the main File > Preferences to your D:\ drive, but have not changed the second one, then this will remain in your nearly full C:\ drive.

And of course, if there is insufficient room on that drive, you will have trouble. Typically, you should allow at least twice the volume of a DVD as free space on the drive where your working folder is located. Anything less than that is likely to cause the computer to stop working on your burning...

To Ken and Trevor. Thank you both for your help. Just in those 2 short answers, I am starting to get a much better idea of the why's and wherefore's of The Ulead system. Your assistance has been invaluable. Keep up the good work. You guy's ROCK!!!

Hi Steve..Thanks for the additional info in "Project files"...Between the excellent help (from Trevor, Ken and yourself) and this further, in depth information, I am starting to see the light. I have been looking for a book with exactly this kind of information for proper ULEAD usage, but none exists, due, I presume, to the millions of possible permutations from so many varieties of computers and the various ways they can be set up. I, as one of the articles said, thought I can just install "intuitively" and use logic to work my way through it. BIG mistake. I would advise any "Newbie" reading this post to absolutely read and understand the info given in this post; and go to the link BEFORE staring any project. I did it backwards and am now learning the hard way (Which in itself is probably good; it made me really understand the programs and how they work;on the other hand, I probably took a few hours off my life from the frustration levels I attained.)

Keep up the good work.

You may want to have a look at this: http://www.getting-results.com/
Seriously underpriced.

Greetings.
Quite under priced...I wonder if it is worth it (because it looks like it might be a "bargain bin" sell-off)Have you used it or have any comments on whether or not it would be worth it?.I have bought other books of this sort and for the most part, they were just a re-hash of the original Manufacturer's manual.Any thoughts?

I was not being sarcastic at all. This book and the related tutorials go into much more depth and detail than the manual. I've been a user since version 6, and when I got the book for version 10 I learned a lot of things I didn't know. Especially for someone new to VideoStudio, I think this book is a must-have.

... And I think you will find a lot of other users who would agree with Black Lab. The book gets uniformly good reviews on this Board.
