Edit image in external program

Post by andrewgerm »

Hi all
I have several images, placed between video clips. These were arranged according to the person the final DVD is being authored for. Due to time constraints, and ongoing work, we had to place the images before several of them were edited. If I now go and edit the image source files, will ths reflect in my project? And how will the temp files from VS work with this? I have VS open, as I am using the timeline to get the image file names and locations. I don't see any sort of refresh option for thumbnails in the timeline.

Thank you
(a newbie)

Yes, if you edit the images they should reflect the changes OK. The timeline and the way everything is "put together" is a reflection of the information in the project file (and vice versa - the project file defines how everything is laid out in your video).

The project file contains references only to the source material i.e. in the case of an image it would contain the file/path name and then information about the duration the image is displayed etc. Same with the video clips - this is why if you delete a video clip (or image file for that matter) and then (re)open the project file VS wants to "relink" - because the project file only contains "pointers" to the real information (it contains much more of course :-) But the important thing is that no "real" files are contains in it i.e. no image files, no video clips etc).

So if you edit the image file then the next time you open VS or render the video it will contain the edited changes :-)

Hope this helps,
Peter

Not sure about images or , in fact, VS since I do not use it. However, I have had MSP asking me if I want to update a link since the file on my time line has since changed but the link refers to the unchanged one. The file was in the same location and had the same name. Not sure what the changes were anymore either but I had this happen many a time.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies.
I get an dialogue box asking for a relink. If I click cancel, and then left click on the image in the timeline again, the thumbnail refreshes and the file updates to the new changes. I haven't changed the location of the files, just edited the contents. So, other than the request for a relink, everything is fine.

Regards to all...

Peter and Heinz are both right.
You may sometimes get a re linking message because of a subtle change in the now edited file occupying the same file location. If you opened the image in PhotoImpact or your favourite image editor and made a few corrections or resized it, the likelihood is the new file will be a different size to the original.
VideoStudio therefore thinks (correctly) it is a different file and displays the re link message.
