Importing home DVDs into Movie Factory

Post by Tman »

I'm just a beginner in all of this stuff, and I'm not a techie. I have some old family videos that I have been transferring to DVDs using Alver Media DVD EZmaker Pro USB2. I don't have time to do any editting right now, so I'm just capturing them on TEON DVD+R 8X discs. One three hour tape uses 3 discs. They have been coming out fine and play back well on the computer or the DVD player on the TV set. Video and audio are in synch and qualtiy is great considering the tapes are 20 years old.
Here is the problem. After burning 6 discs ( 2 full tapes) I realized that I better try importing the files from the DVDs back into Movie Factory 2, just like they will be editted at some future time. I can't do it. Everytime I go thru the procedure, it gets 50% or so thru then I get an error message saying that the "the disc is damaged or copy right protected." All the discs play back well for viewing, but I can't transfer the files back to the computer.
BTW my computer is 1 year old, Pentium 4 - 3GHz, 1 G of RAM, 2 hard drives, it's running fine.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi,
Exactly how are you trying to import the DVD's into the computer.
I forget if MF2 has an import DVD function. If it does and it isn't working
then use the feature "Edit Disk".

In MF2 when you use "Edit Disk" and the disk is a read-only, the
program will copy the complete Mpeg2 file into a sub-directory under the
working directory. After it's imported to the hard disk then MOVE the file
to another folder before exiting the program.
If you exit before moving the file it will be erased.

This method doesn't work in MF3 with the latest updates.
Also, Nero6 will import the whole dvd mpeg2 file.

If you are using the "Edit Disk" feature and having problems look for
fingerprints or defects on the DVD.

Hope this helps,

MD,
I got it to work using the "Edit Disc", and learned a few things along the way.
When I tried the first disc in the "DVD ROM drive", it stopped at 14%. I repeated this again and it stopped at the exact same point. One good thing, however, was that 14% of the file did transfer into MF2 so at least you got something (not like the "Import DVD" function (after you select "New Project" and Next) where you got nothing if it didn't complete). I figured the DVD was damaged or messed up with a fingerprint or something. Then I decided to repeat the process using the "DVD Writer drive" (it's the same drive that burned the disc). When the 14% point came, instead of stopping like I figured, it kept going but did finally stop at 47%, so I got even more of the file transferred.
I then grabbed 2 other burned discs, used "Edit Disc" and got these results:
2nd Disc = DVD Rom Drive: 22%; DVD Writer Drive: 100%
3rd Disc = DVD Rom Drive: 41%; DVD Writer Drive: 100%

So the last two discs did completely import using the "Edit Disc" feature and the DVD Writer drive on my computer.
I'm thinking now that I better get premium brand discs to write on, and that I should store these older captured videos (the 20 year old tapes) on my storage hard drive (and not delete them out so quickly) until I get total confidence that what I have will always be able to import.
MD, Thanks for all your help
