AVI Conversion is SSLLLLOOOOWWWW

Why in the world would it take HOURS to convert a 45 min AVI for burning to DVD?

I have 4, 45min. videos and so far, it's taken 30 minutes to get through 2% of the video conversion for the first file.

It had been running for 6 hours earlier today when I decided to stop it to make sure something wasn't fouled up.

I've used AVI to MPEG conversion tools in the past that did it in real time...i.e. 45min video, 45min conversion. Why is DVD Workshop so slow about it?

At this rate it would take a full 24 hours to burn 1 DVD!

As you may know .AVI is a carrier format and its extension is used by a variety of other formats. You start of with uncompressed 'pure' .AVI, which is huge, and move through DV/AVI to highly compressed formats like DivX and XVid which can cause problems. If indeed your .avi files are DivX or Xvid, you are asking Workshop/your computer to convert a highly complex and compressed format on the fly, as well as do all the other things associated with burning a disc.

A lot of people have trouble when they do this, and extremely long conversion times is merely one associated problem. If you have third party software to convert the DivX/XVid to DVD compatible mpeg-2 before you even start your Workshop project, it would be much simpler and probably much faster...

Ah, thank you....that sounds very logical. These are in fact Xvid files!

Do you have a suggestion for a good mpeg2 convertor?

Thanks!

I've seen this site but have never tried the program. It may be worth looking into ...
