Thank you in advance for any patience this may require, as I am new to the forum and to Ulead VideoStudio 10. I have, as suggested, done a thorough search to find a solution, but either can't decipher or can't properly apply to information I have found.
I am simply trying to add a 10 second movie clip to a project I am making to present at work (its the Jack Nicholson qoute from "A Few Good Men" where he say, "You can't handle the truth!"). I have purchased the movie and tried to capture with it -- no luck. I get the "DVD disc with CSS protected" message.
I have converted / copied the purchased movie with (A piece of software), and can go one step farther when importing, but all of the chapter boxes are already filled in with an "X" so I can't import the chapter I need . . .
I have then downloaded an AVI (divx) version of the movie from (Link Removed) and tried that -- still no dice. The AVI file will not show up in Ulead. The file properties are 480x208, MPEG Layer-3; Bit Rate 127 kbps. I have even downloaded the DivX codec in hopes of making this work, but have had no luck.
Given my lack of a good solid background in this area, I am really at wits end and hoping one of you may be able to help me with a solution . . . Any and all help in getting this 10-second clip added to my video project is greatly appreciated!
I have had to remove a couple of references - sjj1805 - moderator.

Well just for starters, depending on where you are in the world, trying to copy from the original DVD may be a copyright infringement so no-one on the board is really going to want to help on that.
Secondly, when you say you downloaded a Divx copy from (link removed) it kind of sounds a bit like...ummm..copyright infringement again!
Probably if you address those two worries first then you may get some help.

Thanks for your reply. As I said in the OP, I have PURCHASED the movie. It is not a copyright infringement to make a backup copy of the movie that I OWN, nor is it a violation to incorporate part of it in a home movie for my private use. It is my understanding that as long as I'm not charging admission to show their movie, reproducing it in this way is NOT a violation. Surely I can't be the first Ulead user with this question . . .

Ok, I'm not a copyright expert but I think the fact that Steve (the Moderator) chopped out the references will tell you we are shakey ground here.
The CSS protection is to prevent what you did and VS will have trouble handling anything that you extracted as a result. This has come up on the board before.
I think you can make a copy of a DVD for your own private use but I don't think that extends to extracting portions of the product.
I may be wrong.
As far as the Divx copy goes it is highly compressed as a distribution format and not intended for editing. Sometimes you can do it, sometimes not.
I don't think you are intentionally trying to do something wrong but I believe that extracting a portion of a copyrighted product is similar to trying to decompile a piece of software and is not ok.
I will leave it at that for my part.

That is not making a copy for personal use. I am calling the copyright police right now.whoya5555 wrote:I am simply trying to add a 10 second movie clip to a project I am making to present at work
