Gadzooks,
1) You were on the right track to capture the high def video in its native format - Mpeg2 HDV. Capturing in this format is just a copy process.
2) You were on the right track when you edited that format because you have several output options: Mpeg2 HDV, Mpeg2 SD, Divx HD, Xvid HD, etc.
You made some mistakes with your Project Properties, which do not match the capture properties. The frame size, the Field Order and the Audio are wrong.
They should be set to 1440x1080, 25Mbps, Field Order = Upper Field First, Audio: Mpeg layer2.
In your Create Video phase you may have selected "Match Project Properties, which might have resulted in Video Studio going off the rails as it tried to change all those properties to incorrect values.
If you follow the procedure in the HD Tutorial you probably will not encounter these problems.
VS10+ locks up pc during video file creation

I thought of that possibility, even though remote, because it has never hung like this in 2 years in anything, even VS10+, until this past week. I checked the drivers anyway and they were up to date as of August 2006. I checked NVIDIA and there are new ones available Nov 2, so I'll try those.
I also tried a repair on VS but same issue exists. If I do a total software remove and reinstall, as long as I have my .VSP files and original captured files, the reinstall will piece together my edits when referencing those won't it? I won't lose anything?

Shouldn't I have been able to make those changes in the properties after capturing the file? I thought so, but after capture, I go to Project properties and was unable to select anything greater than 720x480 even though the file properties displayed 1440 x 1080. Even in file creation I didn't have that option. I was able to change field order and did so for file creation. I tried using mpeg audio but it didn't resolve my lock up problem anyway, so I didn't think it mattered.
Keep the ideas coming. I'm considering anything right now short of a system rebuild.

I remember reading somewhere that its to do with how hot a particular chip on the GPU is getting.
Perhaps for whatever reason, maybe to do with the overall heat on your mobo because of the CPU & GPU that the entire system is freezing.
Overheating is another reason why pc's can just totally freeze as well as insufficient power.
Personnally I'd go with the full uninstall, then clean up using something like CCleaner to clean both files and the registry, defrag then reinstall and see how you go then.

Gadzooks,
When editing, your Project Properties should match your source file properties. After you captured, VS should have asked if you wanted to set Project Properties to match captured file properties.
You can change properties when you create your video file (last step) but if you don't use the Custom button, you will not find the right property choices available. Also, if you selected "Same as Project Properties" your properties will be incorrect. For example, changing Field Order from Upper to Lower Field First will degrade your video.
Of course, Video Studio should not crash when instructed to change properties to unusual values but when editing video, don't expect perfection and you won't be disappointed.
