interactive Movies setups

Post by Toppler »

Is there a way to setup interactive movies using video Studio 10 or dvd workship? Like when you are watching a movie and then a i guess subtitle comes up and says something like "would you like to 1) go to te store or 2) go to the gym" and it would go to i guess different parts of the dvd according to your anwser. They do it in like kids learning movies allot and stuff.

I don't believe VideoStudio 10 DVD Authoring will give you the flexibility needed to fully customize and create menus/navigational controls.

DVD Workshop 2.x is closer to giving you control over creating menus and the navigational buttons for the different parts of your dvd. You can use "Playlists" to play a Title, and then branch to a specific menu where there can be a question of where to go next, and then the button just branches off to the next Title, and after that Title plays another Menu is shown, and so on...

Depending on how complex your DVD will be, you might need access to edit/modify VM Commands and GPRM/SPRM (register parameters that hold a variety of values during playback of your DVD). This type of access is not available in DVDWS 2.x.

and that will allow me to say have bert and ernie playing in the bath tub and a question pop up on a screen saying should bert and ernie go to school now or stay in the tub and the kid being able to choose which one then have the movie continue on that path that is selected?

You could have a video of Bert and Ernie playing in the tub (don't forget Ernie's rubber duckie :)

Then at the end of that video, you use the last frame of the video as a menu background for a new menu, and add some buttons of where to go next.

The problem with this approach is that the "question" does not come up until the entire video plays through (so if it is 5 minutes, then the viewer sits through the entire 5 minutes). You could add a button to skip to the next question (just allow the NEXT button to jump to the end of the current video clip, and then the next menu pops up -- do this by adding a dummy chapter mark right before the end of the video of Bert and Ernie playing).

Other "Advanced" Authoring packages might allow you to add Buttons-over-video (BOV) to allow navigation away from the current Title at any point during playback. Unfortunately, DVDWS does not allow BOV's. A motion Menu in DVDWS might work (if your clips are short enough).
