VS10+ Sometimes Disappears

Post by StewartTurner »

I sometimes find that my copy of VS10+ disappears with no warning. I can be working on something and then suddely I'm looking at the desktop and there is no VS any more, no error message, no operating system message or anything.

Has anyone else experienced this? It doesn't happen very often but often enough to be irritating. I don't experience it with other software applications I use.

Hi Stewart, there have been two variations of this with both VS10 and 9.
One is the what you are getting where it just disappears and the other is you get the "VS has encountered a problem and must close" one.
The possible causes are almost endless given the variety of computer configurations around as well as software installed.
I found the easiest way is to set up a separate hardware profile using this post from Steve.

Thanks for this link. I followed the instructions and now have a seperate user profile with a separate user account. Everything seems faster and I've seen a significant increase in the spare memory (and decrease in the number of processes running).

Unfortunately VS still seems to disappear occasionally.

I notice that there is a service pack 1 for VS10.

I'm not completely sure of the difference between VS10 and VS10+. Should I apply SP1?

The Service Pack is applicable to VS10+.
Damn! Still disappearing, I thought I would look like a genius by providing that link.
Just off the top of my head I would get hold of a program called "Memtest" and let it run to see if VS is not hitting a faulty section of your memory.
Other than that I am really hoping someone with more knowledge than me steps in and bails me out of this one.

Disappearing VS 10+

Mine is also disappearing randomly. I doubt it is a memory problem. Never had this problem before with version 4 - 9. Is Ulead looking into this? Any other ideas?
Glad I kept version 9 on my PC

The service pack is for all versions of VideoStudio 10.
I can only at this time suggest that when you start a new project - save it as a vsp file. After each major change in your project - save it again.

This is good computer practice no matter what you are doing on your computer and applies just as importantly to things like Word Documents and Excel Spreadsheet etc.

A computer is a vulnerable piece of equipment and at the mercy of some yellow jacketed workman digging a hole on the other side of the road who suddenly puts his spade through the mains electricity cable!

Yes, I agree that it is a good practise to keep saving your work but it isn't an excuse for VS10+ being unstable. I use MS Word and Excel all day long and would consider myself an advanced user. They rarely crash for no apparent reason and I've never had them disappear with no error message.

I applied the service pack. I have had this problem occur only once since then, so it may be slightly improved but still early to say.

Stewart.
