VS10 does not work with ATI Catalyst Drivers

VS10 does not work with ATI Catalyst Drivers
I just purchased an ATI All-In-Wonder X800XT. I installed the drivers included which are the Rage Radeon drivers. This was Catalyst version 4.12 and Multimedia Center 9.03. They work but they do not fully support the Theatre 200 system on the board.
VS9 and VS10 - The preview window is stuck in a weird wide screen mode. I tried all the suggestions I could find but nothing has worked. My source was right off the TV in 4:3 mode, NTSC, MPEG 720x480.
I download and installed the latest Catalyst Drivers version 6.11 and MMC Version 9.15. These fully support the T200 chip and load the "AVSTREAM T200 Wonder Drivers". All of my other capture software works good.
Video Studio does not work at all! I get the error message "Unable to switch to capture mode".
I found a few posts about this but absolutely no resolution.
Anyone else with this problem and is there some kind of resolution?

I found this too when ATI switched to the AVStream. I don't know what version of the catalyst driver it was but since then it does not work with Ulead anymore. ATI's software and virtual dub both work. I also tried another one but forget the name which led me to believe it was a VS problem. I hardly ever capture analog anymore but when I do I just use the ATI MMC software to do it then import to Ulead. I actually have to do this anyway because the AIW card is now in a different computer than my main machine running VS.
Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop

I just tried to go back to the original ATI NSP Drivers but VideoStudio is totally messed up. I uninstalled and tried to install a clean VS system but I guess I did not get all of it removed.
They switched to the AVStream drivers with Catalyst Version 6.3.
This is definitely a problem with VideoStudio. I tried other capture software and it all works.

I had to update my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro drivers a few weeks ago and did not like the look of that hyper-complicated Catalyst control system and its bloatware download, so I installed just the updated driver and left the old control system in place, which found the new driver with no problem.
This fixed the screen problem that I was having (with another application) and Video Studio 10+ works fine.

More info
I resolved part of the problem!
I had to rollback my driver to Catalyst 6.2 which is the latest that still installs the older ATI NSP capture driver on my board.
As I mentioned in my first post, VS-10 is locked in some strange widescreen mode. I believe I have identified the problem and I can correct it during each session. The change is not stored anywhere that I can identify.
In "Preferences" under the "capture tab" enable or check "allow access to capture device's settings". Start Capture mode and select "Options", "Capture Properties". Now under "Property Type" I used the dropdown box to select "Video Preview Pin" and then clicked on properties. This brings up the Stream Properties dialog. Under "Color Space / Compression" I switched to YUY2.
Do the same for "Video Capture Pin". Mine was set correctly and VS actually would capture the video correctly.
Problem is the preview screen reverts right back to the incorrect widescreen mode when the capture is stopped.
I still have not ID'd the problem with the AVStream Capture drivers!

INF Error while installing ATI Drivers
This is really a mess! I was gettting this error while trying to install the latest drivers from ATI/AMD so I used the manual install of the individual drivers instead of the integrated full driver package.
The "INF Error, Video Driver not found" error was driving me crazy so I tore into the integrated 6.11 driver package. The error is generated during installation of the Display Driver in the full package.
I found the Display Driver is not the same as the individual driver. The .inf files do not define my X800 board, therefore it was reporting the video driver not found. In fact, it does not define most of the boards it is supposed to support.
I installed the individual ATI drivers but there is still a problem with the individual "WDM Integrated Driver". This is why I was having problems with VideoStudio 10. The "Video Preview Pin" is missing from the Properties dialog after installing Catalyst 6.11.
I merged the individual Display Driver into the integrated package and it now runs without the INF Error. It now works with VideoStudeo!
However, it does not work completely with VideoStudio 10. It still has the messed up widescreen preview screen but captures just fine. This could be taken care of if someone could lead me to the correct .ini file that contains the Preview properties.

Video Studio has ini files scattered all over the place (whatever happened to "encapsulation" as a design principle?). Like the many-headed hydra, you have to kill all of them before you reinstall.
After you uninstall VS, examine C:\Documents and Settings\ in every possible user combination and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems for any remaining traces of Ulead files. (You will also delete the burning engine that is shared by other Ulead products but this will be reinstalled.)
These experiences with ATI video drivers lead me to think that, when I get a new computer, I will avoid ATI for video processor boards because it seems that they have lost sight of another essential design principle: "Keep It Simple, Stupid."

Have you tried to reinstall VS 10 again?
VS 10 is supposed to work with ATi.

Which model NVidia did you get? How much video memory? When the prices come down a bit more, I'm thinking of getting a 24" widescreen LCD that has 1920x1080 native res. That should give a nice long timeline for video editing.maddrummer wrote:Switched to Nvidia for the most part and haven't looked back.
H.T.,
VS10 does work quite well with my ATI Radeon 9800Pro card. It is just that the control system for the drivers has grown huge, complex, and unwieldy.

"I feel your pain." I've never been able to get my 9600XT to record via VS9 . You've already gotten further than I ever did with that, and you've obviously tried harder than I ever did. (Let's just say I don't consider it to be VideoStudio's issue.)
I and a person I know with an X800XT use Multimedia Center to do the recording to mpeg's and then edit those files, and we get good results. The Multimedia Center does have some decent settings to record with.
If you're open to that I'd like to refer to http://www.rage3d.com/board/ which is a goldmine of information regarding ATI driver/MMC software, particularly software versions and card combinations people are using with good results. I'd also suggest you go there to check the procedures for changing driver and MMC versions, as the concensus seems to be that just "updating" or "rolling back" doesn't work particularly well.
I honestly can't tell you what versions we're using at this point other than they are far from new, with good reason, and it's a mix and match. Whatever we came up with came from that forum and it works so I don't mess with it. It's buried in my "Reinstalling Windows" notes somewhere. I really don't want to think about it too hard because honestly every time I think about it I get a headache & I fear that someday I may start bleeding from the ears.
Anyway you seem quite capable and willing to tweak and you will find some good options there. Might work better than trying to shove ATI down VideoStudio's throat.
Good luck either way.
P.S. - Wouldn't hurt my feelings to dodge the whole ATI software issue someday either. I like the hardware, "but"...

It's not my Job!

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I have been on Rage3d quite often and have seen this same issue.
Whenever you have to be the go between with 2 companies you start to look at thinks like this:
There were four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Have you tried the latest 6.12 ATI drivers?
Thanks for the info, I had the same problems 6 months ago. Finally removed VS10. My pc works great. I am using roxio 9 and adobe premiere. I like VS10 but it just doesn't play well with other software. Have you tried the latest 6.12 ATI drivers and VS10? I may try to install VS10 after I upgrade to ATI 6.12. I have to ghost first so I don't hose-up my pc. I hate to waste a lot of time on this. Has anyone got it to work?
