Project Size estimate wrong??

Post by LadyH »

I am trying to create a new dvd (4.7G, NTSC format, 4:3) using Movie Factory 5 Plus.

Whenever I try to add video files (NTSC, AVI format, 4:3) the project bar (at the bottom of the screen) appears to incorrectly estimate the size of the file by a large margin.

The AVI file size I'm trying to import is 717,566 KB but (even after unselecting "create menu") the project bar says it's over 4.7G...4.78G to be exact (..ie won't fit on the dvd). When I look at the media clip properties after importing the clip it states the file size correctly. Also, when I simply do a "drag and drop" method of creating a dvd there is no problem. I have tried other AVI clips and they all appear MUCH larger once imported into program.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?? Thank you.

You are confusing things. You said you add AVI files, great. What flavour of AVI? Surely not DV-AVI.

The symptoms you describe let me believe that we are talking about some heavily compressed AVI, most likely DivX, Xvid or mpeg4. Most DVD players cannot yet play these formats. That is immaterial though since the DVD standard does not allow for these compression schemes. It only allows mpeg2 at certain frame sizes.

When you add such a file to a DVD project, MF will estimate the file size after transcoding the file to DVD compliant mpeg2.

Sorry, it is a divx format that I'm using and I have a dvd player that is divx compatable.

My goal is to add these files to a dvd and create a menu for them if possible without converting to MPEG-2 format. How would I go about doing this (other than skipping the menu and just doing a drag and drop)?

Thank you.

Sorry, but I'm out of my depths here, never done anything with DivX. You can certainly just burn the files to a DVD blank and play them with your DVD player. As for the menu..., someone more converse with this format needs to come to your aid here.

I've never messed-around with DivX either, but AFAIK the DivX "standard" doesn't include menus. So, even if you could make a DivX DVD with menus your DVD player probably wouldn't know how to handle it.

What is the playing time of your movie/program? You can make a standard video-DVD that's over 2 hours long if you use Dolby audio and the correct MPEG-2 bitrate. Here's a handy Bitrate Calculator.

A couple of warnings: People often report that it takes 12 hours to convert from DivX (or Xvid) to MPEG-2!!! Sume people have had better luck using a 3rd-party program to convert the file to MPEG-2 before importing it to Movie Factory. (SUPER is a FREE video conversion program.)

Every time you convert from one "lossy" compression format to a different lossy format, you loose some video quality. Some quality was lost when the video was converted to DivX, and there will be more loss when you convert it to MPEG-2.

These highly compressed formats can sometimes cause trouble when you try to convert them to DVD. Some users report crashing and/or 'lip-sync" problems. They are really designed to be played on your computer, and you will find very little software that's specifically designed for for converting DivX / Xvid to DVD.... There is lots of software for converting DVD's to DivX / Xvid.

Making a DivX DVD with MF?

(I've not made a DivX DVD, but have done DivX/XviD conversion from/to various other formats.) My understanding is that you can't use MovieFactory to do what you're wanting to. MF deals with standard DVDs with MPEG-2 encoded files.

What you need is a program like DivXMediaBuilder, which will "create full feature DivX files [with] menus, chapters and other features of new DivX format".

The best place to get further help is in the Doom9 Forums.

Do take heed of DVDoug's warning about audio syncing problems, in my experience much more likely to trouble you with the highly compressed DivX/XviD formats than with MPEG-2.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help everyone. Velojet I will check into the program you mentioned, hopefully that will work.
