I use IrfanView to play a lot of midi files of rags, principally, and on installing VS 10 only some of them now appear to work. Let me qualify that. They all work, but some I can hardly hear, even with the volume turned up fully on my equipment and on the Windows Volume control. Some appear to be unaltered in volume, some fluctuate in volume, one wildly. The effect is absolutely reproducible - a file always behaves in the same way, but different files in the same folder behave very differently.
It sounds rather like a Dolby effect, where low volumes are made even quieter, and high ones much louder. Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly which files were quieter and which louder, although I have noticed a clear difference between some of them in the past in this respect.
I have a Dell workstation, 2.6GHz, 512MB of system memory, two hard drives each of 80Gb, each split into 2 logical drives. For the record each file on entirely different drives acts in exactly the same way.
Any ideas, anyone, as to what is happening here?

Thanks for the ideas - and I'm sorry a rather manic life stopped me thanking you earlier. Unfortunately W2000 has subtly different options, and while I think I have covered the equivalent to what you have suggested no dice, I'm afraid.
Just to compound things it also seems to have mucked up more than just Irfanview playback, but, needless to say, VS10 operation is untouched. I did get into the VS10 options and set the sound to simple stereo rather than Dolby 5x but this has not solved the problem. I have to say it has soured my view of VS which, in version 6, worked like a dream.
