Capturing the Computer Screen

Post by Phil S »

Is there any way that I can capture what goes on on the Computer Screen to a Video file .avi or otherwise.

I want to make a tutorial video of a software package as a film which shows the pointer moving about and the screen changes like it would be in real time. I know I could film the screen with my Video camera but is there a way to do it by capturing the screen direct.

I have VS10+ so I can add narration later, but what else do I need to capture, I can't see a way to do this just with VS running minimised.

I'm not sure if I'm stepping over the boundary regarding rules on other products, but this one is freeware, and will do exactly what you want.

You can capture the whole screen or just a selected area. It will save in .avi or .swf format. Audio recording is also an option.

If you post some tools that can help your projects and it's not competitive with Ulead, that should be OK in my opinion.

For capturing the computer screen as video, you can also try Camtasia from TechSmith. It would require you to install the TechSmith codec pack in your system.

Thank you for these links. These tools do exactly what I want.

I can now capture the screen and import the resulting .AVI file to VS where I can tidy it up, add narration, titles and overlays.

This is complimentary to VS and not competing with it.

Thanks again.
