Capture setting does not match project setting

Post by Neil Goodwill »

I use MF5+ with a Hauppauge PVR250, and also for capturing straight to MPEG from a DV source. In both cases I customize the project settings at the start, then choose MPEG in the Capture stage. My problem is that when I have captured and then look at the Media Clip Properties I find that they never match the project settings. Does anyone know why this should happen? :?

I see no one has responded so I will give my unqualified comments. I am farily new to this so it may or may not be helpful.

I have a panasonic DVD recorder to which I burn episodes of TV shows for later editing using MF5+. I can chose the recording quality for the DVD recorder and usually select 2 hr for a disc. When I import the DVD-Video into MF5+ the video clip properties are not the same as the project settings. I assume that the MF5+ settings are imposed on the DVD when it is burned after editing and menu creation. I did try the "Export Selected Clips" function to see what different mpeg settings would look like. All the exported clips exported with the project settings that differed from the original clip.

So it seems that the project settings apply to the re-rendering process and not to the properties of the imported clip (I guess?).

Hope this is some help.

I'm not sure why you think you have a problem. You can set the project properties to suit your captured clips

The only time you are bound to get a mismatch is when you use an mpeg from your TV capture mixed with an mpeg created from your DV camcorder material. The field order is going to be different for both. Analog captures (ie. from your TV broadcast) are captured/recorded upper fiel first whereas DV is recorded lower field first.

Thank you for help. I have got it sorted now, this is what I do.
As soon as I start a new project I click on Project Settings, Change MPEG Settings and choose one of the settings that I've previously setup as templates to suit my PVR250 capture card or any of the other templates. Then when I go to the Capture Video section I choose the same setting in the Format box.
It is all very simple and straightforward I just wish the MF manual could have explained this better in the first place. :D

Neil,
Your analog capture device uses hardware compression and can only capture at some pre-defined bit-rates using MF capturing module. It's specific to the Hauppauge line of capture cards.

I use the capture software that came with the PVR150 to capture video. This way I can tailor the bit-rates better and set GOP's = 6 for editing & trimming when I import the videos into MF.

Still cannot find a 16:9 setting using the Hauppauge software for capturing.
I can set the registers for the PVR150 to capture 16:9 in Linux no problem and capture or stream video under Linux with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Cannot find a 16:9 aspect ratio using the windows software.

The PVR range of Hauppauge cards are 4.3 only.
to get 16.9 you need the HVR range of cards.

For capturing tips please see

Steve,
You mean 4:3 limitation in windows.
The hauppauge cards have a 16:9 setting in their chipsets. Easy to set it.
I think I know why in windows they don't make 16:9 easily available because they could do it.
You get 16:9 with the HVR because they are forced to. HDV is natively 16:9
I've heard of some 3rd party software that can use the advanced abilities of the PVR cards, never bothered to test them.
